The Cat's Meow: New Look

As you can see . . . SassyCat got a new look! There's a blonde(me) avi, there's a zebra lounge couch which I love and the numerous options for backgrounds so far I'm head over heels on the zebra (pink or white).

So how did I end up changing up the look without notice? Well it better to be surprise then spew out a few words that there were going to be some changes done. However Rachel of Parajunkee Design hosted a giveaway on FB for a free Blogger Template $50 dollars worth. All you had to do was like comment and share and I did all out of the two (I believe) and I actually won it!

It was a much needed thing for SassyCat, even though the look I was going for or wanted requires custom designs and the money which I don't have. So that dream and idea is put on hold, for now I can ogling on the new look that actually in many ways suits me as a person. So I might be in trouble when figuring out how far I want to go for customization.

So I like to thank Rachel of Parajunkee, for actually putting it up because my laptop wouldn't do a single thing and I couldn't figure out on the main computer because the files were Zipped. So I just had her do it and she got it done in seconds! Like really in seconds after I made her admin and talking to her via FB.

But I did figure out how to unzipped the files on the main computer (thanks to a little feature that my laptop doesn't have) so I saved everything on there, now I might switch to black and white zebra print or change the font colors, gadgets colors. You never know so don't be surprise if you see a little changes here and there. Also I'm so super excited about the avi and having it as my twitter profile and my google+ profile. I have raters and a FB cover however I still have to set up a FB page, the the one I love that I have always wonder "how the heck do they get that?" Is the book description box. Now that I have that feature don't be surprise to see that more often.

So again thank you Rachel and now I need to make it a goal to set up that FB page.

Catty Chat Discussions: Spin offs

MEEOOWW! I've finally come up with a great title for discussions posts! I present to you the
 Catty Chat!

So let's talk spin offs on books,

Do you like them?
Do you dislike them? If so why?
Does it work?
Does the author stay true to the world?
How do you feel about Ghostwriters?

There's all sort of questions to consider when reading a series spin off, in my opinion some spin off are great for TV but I don't know about books. I don't actually think I've had read any spin off books . . .

So let's look at the following books that are in spin offs,

Vampire Academy/Bloodlines
Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead, she had taken characters from vampire Academy and given them their own story. Now I haven't pick up either of the series but if you are one of those that read the entire Vampire Academy and follow through with the next series.

Vampire Diaries
I'm sure everyone is pretty familiar with The Vampire Diaries (TV show) but I want to talk about the books, I've only read the first two and then I got onto other books but while I followed the show I ingore the books and come to find out that there were three other spin off!

The Vampire Diaries features The Awakening: Volume I (1991), The Struggle: Volume II (1991), The Fury: Volume III (1991), Dark Reunion: Volume IV (1992).

The Return trilogy featurs The Return: Nightfall (2009), The Return: Shadow Souls (2010), The Return: Midnight (2011) .

The Hunters trilogy features The Hunters: Phantom (2011) (Written by a ghostwriter), The Hunters: Moonsong (2012) (Written by a ghostwriter), The Hunters: Destiny Rising (2012) (Written by a ghostwriter)

The Salvation trilogy features The Salvation: Unseen (2013) (Written by Aubrey Clark), The Salvation: Unspoken (2013) (Written by Aubrey Clark), The Salvation: Unmasked (2014) (Written by Aubrey Clark).

WOW I'm amazed that readers are still in tuned with the books! Like I don't know if I could read three other spin off books, now have you read any of the other spin off books in The Vampire Diaries world?

Mortal Instrument
Now the Mortal Instruments, I've read all but the last book that just came out in May . . .  I really want to read it but I just hadn't had the time! Cassandra Clare wrote the Infernal Devices as well set in 1878. This is a struggling time for the shadowhunters.
She also written The Bane Chronicles all on Bane the most powerful warlock POV, I haven't gotten any of those books but I've always enjoyed reading TMI between Bane and Alec.

Cassandra announce that she was writing a spin off of the Mortal Instrument called The Dark Artifices sets about 5 years later after whatever happens in City of Heavenly Fire. She is bringing new characters and new dangers. I can't wait for it to come out, there a couple other talks she had about even more spin off and here's a message that she share about spins off.

Nightshade
Andrea Creamer have drawn us in her young adult/fantasy world of Nightshade, she spends a great deal about historical influences in her fantasy world. So you know that she would write spin-off that take you back to the past about where everything started that lead up to Calla's story. She also wrote Snakeroot that takes place after Bloodrose which I have not read yet but do have it on my shelf.

Iron Fey
Julie Kagawa have brought the world of Fairies, yes you read that right fairies . . . I have not read the books but I have just about every one of them thank to my friend gifting them to me for Christmas/birthday. Now all I have to do is find a time to read that series as well the spin off. So who like the spin-off? Is the world still true to the first series The Iron Fey?

Others . . . .
So I've heard that Amanda Hocking was going to do a spin off series off the Tyrlle world, but I had no idea when so I completely forgot all about it until EW feature the cover of her new book Frostfire. Granted it gained my attention, however I'm not sure why I feel the way that I do . . . But I have mix feelings about the spin off. It's been nearly 3 years since Ascend(Trylle #3) been published.
Am I concern that the world won't be as great as it was when I first read Switched? Or will this spin off be working too hard to match the readers expectations? I don't know I'm just "shrug shoulders" type, how will the spin off go?

But I'm willing to read it and try and keep an open mind, hopefully I can get that same reaction like I did before when I first read the trylle series.

I'm not even going to start about the Harry Potter spin off, I mean these books been coming out since I've been in middle school for crying out loud! We just ended the movie in 2011! So just don't go there . . .

So how about you? What do you feel about spin offs and if you have read spin off books what did you think of them?

Book Review: Partials

Partials (Partials Sequence #1) by

Partials (The Partials Sequence, #1)For fans of The Hunger Games, Battlestar Galactica, and Blade Runner comes the first book in the Partials Sequence, a fast-paced, action-packed, and riveting sci-fi teen series, by acclaimed author Dan Wells.

Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. But sixteen-year-old Kira is determined to find a solution. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that that the survival of both humans and Partials rests in her attempts to answer questions about the war's origin that she never knew to ask.

Playing on our curiosity of and fascination with the complete collapse of civilization, Partials is, at its heart, a story of survival, one that explores the individual narratives and complex relationships of those left behind, both humans and Partials alike—and of the way in which the concept of what is right and wrong in this world is greatly dependent on one's own point of view.

Supports the Common Core State Standards

Review
How does a species survive?
When everything is in the world is meant to eliminates for what you are . . . Kira Walker doesn't have much to call her world perfect, she watches and studies babies that dies hours after its birth from the RM virus . . . a virus that is responsible to wiping the human species to near extinct.

The war between the humans and the Partials is halted but why when the Partials have the advantage, but what if there's a reason?

Kira wants to starts saving her species and stop unnamed newborns becoming a statistics over and over again ,. . . her plan? Find a Partial and Study it hoping to find the answer.

Partials present an futuristic science-fiction scenario where human species is near extinct and Partials are the enemy or so history says.

I'm giving this a Four Cat's Tail Ups, because while I like the futuristic component as well the two species that are struggling to survive there were parts that made the story drone out of my interest rather than keep me interested.

MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW
So this is my second time reading Partials, I read Partials back in 2012 and while I had enjoy it back then I wasn't as an active reviewer back then so after getting Fragments and Ruins. I had set my goal of reading series books for the year of 2014.
The time is set in 2076, human population is nearly extinct . . . the RM virus was engineered by the Partials to kill . Young Kira Walker is just your ordinary strong-willed medic, she as well everyone else wishes there was a way to fight the RM virus and save the future of the human species.

My first impression of this world is that it would be quiet scary to have that happen, a virus that kills humans and we became a dying species. I like that Kira was someone who decided that she couldn't let this virus continue to kill newborns since they are the one that dies from the virus. What drove Kira to do something is when one of her friends becomes pregnant, she wasn't going to let her friend's baby become another statistic.

The plan her plan . . . Find a Partial and Study it. Simple right? nope you got the Voices to worry about, as well the rest of the city that is in ruins. Kira's mission place herself in danger but also reaching her primary goal in finding a Partial.

Meet Samm the Partials, quiet as well the enemy . . . Kira has 5 days to study him learning about his Anatomy and Physiology and what she found out was an amazing new discovery and a possibility that RM can be cure.
But Samm also reveals something to Kira, that much to my amazement was not surprising, but there has to be pros and cons about the two very different species.

What I know is that the partials has a plan, some sort of plan but where and what will be the big question.

There would be no peace among the humans while there's a partial in their area, but that won't stop Kira from getting what she wants. During the time she studied Samm I saw that she was growing towards him, like there was some sort of connection between them but neither her or Samm could figure it out until Kira is in Samm's situation.

Does the Partials carry the key to saving newborn babies, is Kira Walker a part of that revolution that the people need?

UtopYA Con: Book Hauls

I kept putting this off and off and off, but I know that I have to share what books I got from my UtopYA Con.

I got a scrapbook for all the bookmarks, postcards, swags items . . . Mom got ahead of me and I was not ready to start the scrapbook so she went ahead and started. After telling her to stop one final time she did stop although I think she want to do more the next day.

I'm a creative person don't get me wrong but I wasn't in the mood for it and I was dealing with a minor headache that seems to not go away (it's gone now!)

Anyways my book haul, I took with me total of 17 books and books that was books I gotten at UtopYA CON . . . 43 books. So I came home with exactly 60 books in three different bags. It could have been worst . . . like really worst but I stayed with my budget that I saved and still return home with money left over (shocking)

Here's the books that I brought with me

Yes you saw that! There is 8 Jennifer L Armentrout books, while JLA had flight problems these pretties were not signed. Next on the very bottom is Jessica Sorensen who I thought was going to be there I had heard something or maybe I heard it wrong. Anyways I still end up getting a good deal out of buying the first two books of The Secret seriesfeaturing Ella and Micha.

Next we have Crewel which I found awhile back and Gennifer was one of the keynote speakers at UtopYA, I haven't read her books or really heard of her (blogger/reader problem) but I still picked it up anyways. Next is Bridger by Megan Curd who I've know for years through facebook and twitter (she's is awesome!) well in the mist of packing I found that Bridger was unsigned although I've have had it for a couple years but she was gladly to sign it anyways for me :-)
Rachel Harris! I actually met Rachel Harris who is all fun and flirty girly, I got the two My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century for a great price as well.
Next Syliva Day the (better) romance novelist, the one that actually gain my interest to read her books when Fifty Shades of Gray was popular. But I wasn't ready to buy her books yet until some made their way to the discounts sections so mom and I snagged them.
It was clear to me that Target was only place that I was going to get a Tiffany King book, so that is what I did and plus I'm a target member so bonus!

Next it's the books that I preordered, I found that preordering books were a guarantee that you'll get the books you want and if there were authors that didn't set up a preorder that I wanted I crossed my fingers and I did get some that were on my list but not preordered.
So what were the books?
Fly House by Misty Provencher
21 days by Bethany Lopez
8 weeks by Bethany Lopez
Cold Blood by Heather Hildenbrand
Blood Bond by Heather Hildenbrand
Prince of Wolves by Quinn Loftis
Blood Rites by Quinn Loftis
Meant for Her by Raine Thomas
For Everly by Raine Thomas
Reap by Casey Bond
Winter Shadows by Casey Bond
Devil Creek by Casey Bond
The Space Between by Kristie Cook

The books that I blame my mom for buying and drawing me into it, this one is going to be a long list of names and books.

Reborn by C.C. Hunter
Take me to your Reader Anthology by various author

Books that were in our bags . . . for a Blogger bag and UtopYA bags
A Secret Life by Rachael Brownell
(2) Angel Burn by L.A Weatherley

And last but not less, is two Journals from the fabulous Mae I Design photographer Regina Wamba, she has more journals that just went live on amazon. You can't say no to journals, I mean where do you think it all started?

So yes I gain 43 NEW books onto my shelf, although not ONE book have been place on my shelf, they still remains in the bags in the living room. So I guess I'm still hungover from UtopYA Con and I've been really busy helping my friend plan her wedding.

Enchanted Heart Book Tour: Interview with Mindy

Enchanted Heart (Game of Hearts #1)

Enchanted Heart (Game of Hearts #1)
By Mindy Ruiz
Cassandra Vera never ever broke the rules.

Ever!

She’s also had a nonexistent social life since her best friend moved to Vegas. Armed with a new set of resolutions, the promise of a hot date, and her adoptive parents out of town, seventeen-year-old Cassandra agrees to a road trip, which is the perfect way to celebrate her birthday and ring in the New Year. After all, she’s headed to Vegas, the city where secrets are meant to stay hidden. Little does Cassandra know her past is buried there as well.

Cloaked in the shadows of the glitz and gaudy lights of Vegas lies a power struggle centuries old. One wrong step and Cassandra could destroy the delicate web of secrets. Now an enemy she never knew existed is after her, and the one boy who may be the missing piece to the puzzle — and her heart— is the one person she can’t afford to trust

Today I have the lovely Mindy here on my blog, answering some questions and getting deep inside her mind.

Your book is taken place in Vegas, if you could pick three rules to follow what would they be?
I’m a rule breaker so I’d totally be able to count cards, have access to all the hidden passages, and be able to control the graphics on the Fremont Street digitial canopy.
What inspire you to choose Vegas as the primary location but also to be the most dangerous place for your character?
I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and Las Vegas has always held this far off forbidden glimmer.  It’s also just close enough that kids in my high school would try these overnight runs; most were caught but the few that got away with it were legends.  You mix that with Katy Perry’s Waking up in Vegas and Lady Gaga’s Poker face …BAM … you have the beginnings of Enchanted Heart
What does each of the Vegas House represent? And where would you fit in?
Each Vegas house has a latent power and a battle power.  We don’t get a full understanding of the battle power until Book 2.  But the latent power is strong enough to get our characters into all sorts of trouble.
The very cool thing about Enchanted Heart is the interactive elements.  You can go to Vegas and find the places in the book. And we developed a personality quiz that will sort you into house. Bit.ly/GameOfHearts is where you can take your quiz.  And, if you like my facebook page Facebook.com/MindyRuizBooks and private message me, I’ll send you a house designator.
What do they mean . . .

House of  Diamonds:
Latent powers: Riches and wealth come from the fact that they are human lie detectors.
Diamonds really are forever.  As a member of the House of Diamonds, not only do riches and wealth seem to accumulate around you, your latent power of knowing when a person is telling the truth and when they’re lying really comes in handy when dealing with The Shadows.

House of Hearts:
Latent power: to create an unbreakable bond.
Pat Benetar had it right, you’re a heat breaker, love maker, and the latent effect of the House of Hearts to create unbreakable bonds is one of the most sought after powers.  That’s probably why your house has been forbidden to hook up with anyone from the House of Spades.

House of Spades:
Latent power: Influence
A smile goes along way when you’re a member of the House of Spades.  Well, that and the ability to influence those around you.  Can you sweet talk your way out of any situation? Bat your eyes and get an extra hour on curfew?  Welcome to the House of Spades. But remember: with great power comes great responsibility.

House of Clubs:
Latent Power: Bring good luck to people when combined with the black opal the heir of Clubs can see the future.
Luck is a very thin wire between survival and disaster … it’s a good thing you reside in the House of Clubs.  While you love to walk on the wild side of life, those around you tend to shoulder the fallout.  And remember, even if you're a high-ranking member in the House of Clubs, your luck is always a bad choice from running out.

House of Midas:
Latent power:  the heir to the gamming commission can save one soul during their life time; better make it a good one.
Law and Order with a splash of excitement. As a member of the House of Midas, you love a good adventure and bending a few rules, but within reason and as long as you’re controlling the reason.  You make sure everyone is having a good time, sometimes at your own expense.  The only problem you have being in the House of Midas is when your duties conflict with your heart; and then it’s anyone’s guess what you’ll do.

Who would I be? What would we both be?
Mindy: I keep taking the personality quiz over and over again and wind up in the House of Spades every time.
Me: I've taken the quiz at least twice and still end up in the House of Midas, I even got a key chain from Mindy when I met her at UtopYA labeled with the House of Midas and a poker chip. Poker chips are actually a fun little swag to get from her as well a deck of cards!
If you're curious to what house you belong in take the quiz! Here

What would be the theme song for Enchanted Heart?
Ke$ha’s Blow.  I know, not what you were thinking!  1. The lyrics really do encompass what’s happening to all of the otherworldly characters in Las Vegas when Cassie arrives. 2. My teen crush, James VanDerBeek stars in the video. 3. There’s unicorns and rainbows. Unicorns AND rainbows, hello!
When you’re not writing, you’re doing what?
When I’m not writing I’m usually chasing after my three boys or catching up with my husband.  During football season, you can find my tush rooting for the Dallas Cowboys.
Favorite snack to munch on?
I either go very healthy with cucumbers or very unhealthy with chocolate covered moose munch, and sometimes the occasional peach mojito to get me through those tough scenes.
What do you have to do in order to get into a writing groove or what does get you in a writing groove?
To get into the groove all I need is five minutes of quiet.  In a house full of boys, those moments are few and far between so I’ve learned headphones are mommy’s best friend.  What gets me into a writing groove? Music and life.  My girlfriends are always amazed how I can find the most mundane task like taking the kids to school and put a twist on it when something out of the ordinary happens.

Casino Games favorite? Since the book is taken place in Vegas.
I love roulette! I love craps! I despise twenty-one, the pressure of all that math and counting gives me hives!
Mindy Thanks for answering these questions for me and I can't wait for number two!

Here's the giveway!
Be sure to check out my PURRFECT review of Enchanted Heart! HERE  Plus here's a pic of me and Mindy from UtopYA Con!!!!

Review
It's New's Year Eve you're in Sin City plus and it's your birthday, but just because you're the birthday girl doesn't mean you can break the rules and Cassandra Vera just broke the biggest one of all and the only rule of all.

Don't ever go to Vegas . . .

Cassie never thought that by entering Vegas, her whole life will change in a blink of an eye

The Sin city deals with Centuries of power struggles, where the houses of Clubs, Diamonds, Spades, Hearts and Midas are all on gambling strike. But now that Cassandra has step foot into Vegas, the bets are off or at less that what each of the houses are hoping.

Can Cassandra understand what's at sakes or will she simply refused to acknowledge that she is part of this power struggle

How much are you willing to gamble?

I love love Enchanted Heart!!! I can't possibly give this one just a 5 Tails Up, it's get my PURR FEST Review where everything was just PURRFECT! MEOW!

Meow . . . Meow . . . Meow
Okay this book was PURRFECT! I love Mindy' s imaginations and bringing the visuals of Vegas through words on a page were dead set on! Now I've never been to Vegas but you know I've seen shows or movies that were taken place in Vega or some aspect of Vegas so it definitely attracts my attention.

There were hints of Greek Mythology, while I didn't know that and had some issues with books that had Greek Mythology influence. Mindy made it much more modernize and creating her own sort of troubles, problems, and maybe some history between each of the Greek mythology leaders/influences.

Let's talk about the guy, the heart-throbbing A.J now at first he was just that guy that Cassie "almost" hooked up I mean HEY it's Vegas! But then A.J realizes something, something he wasn't expecting and suddenly everything that he's been raised and trained to do goes out the window.

Now there were a few time in the book where I really thought he's going to break my heart like 100% each time I could read a certain passage and got a sensed of a scene I would be like "No No NO!" but then sighs in relief it wasn't anything horrible (YET). Plus there was a major twist and storyline for him that make you want to know more!

I really can't wait for Book 2 and see what other things happen in the book, out of all the books I've read this past two months this one is by far my best read ever. There wasn't anything I hate or dislike, that saying a lot for a reader/reviewer. I'm not being so critical because I don't have to and the way Mindy writes is just spectacular. Here's some confetti Mindy!

Top Ten Wednesday: Blogging Confessions

So I think I'm going to change things up around here on SassyCat's Books Review, since I haven't been entirely active and pretty soon I won't be because of things going on in Life. So I've decided that I will participate in some of the other blogs I follow daily memes. It may not always be on that day or that week but if I see something that I like then I'll blog.

Why I haven't done this yet or before? Well simply put I wanted to expand my own creativity when comes to blogging meme and such but then again everything that I could think of has already been around for 5 years!

So today is my Top Ten (Wednesday) Blogging Confession, I saw Great Imagination's post and I have the same problem and maybe other blogging problems.
The Top Ten Tuesday meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme:  Blogging Confessions. As for me I'm posting it on Wednesday.

I just started getting into a Reading funk, before I took off on my trip I had read four books yes I know that didn't seem many but two were for upcoming book tours, one was a series to read book and the other was an arc read. How many books I've read since after/during my trip? 4 books yet again. That is eight books read just in one month or just over a month. You can say my mind and reader's brain went mush that everything seems blah.

Behind on Reviews, I've been behind on reviews since May. My total books that still need to be reviewed is 8 books. I've been gradually changing how I review books, being more critical and trying to provide the best feedback I can and express my likes/dislikes of the book.

Books that I plan to read, these are books that I'll take part in reviewing an ARC copy and possibly be part of the blog tour. There are two that I'm waiting from my authors for the ARC to be available for requests. The other book is Oppression by Jennifer L Armentrout, I am crossing my fingers that I'll be attending one of the event for the Oppression Tour nearby.  That's it after that I'll be in school and hoping working a job so I'll be less active but trying to keep up with everything.

Finding a balance, I've had struggles maintaining a balance between school and blogging there are at some points I wonder why am I forcing myself to blog? It's not a job, its a hobby that I take very serious in but I need to find that balance, set plans . . . schedule posts.

I want to improve my blog, I know I need to jump on setting up a Facebook page but I'm still holding off on that . . . don't ask me why. I think really I just need the time to sit down and go all out on creating the page rather than do a simple setup.

I don't have email subscribers, just the other day I thought I would get MailChimp but that proven to be difficult trying to figure out how the heck to put it on my blog. So I delete it and will try something else.

I haven't host my own personal giveaways, I'm just not where I want to be . . . I don't have the audience for starters and all my giveaways are through the blog tour host not ME. I hope that I will host giveaways but I would really like to see more audiences first.

I still books binges, that will never end but now I found great deals of awesome YA/Teen books in my discounted section at my bookstore. I'll share some of those reasons why it might just help your pockets just a little bit more.

I'm going to fail my goal of reading series books this year, I didn't think it would be that hard but it is! Even when I own (most) of them. So I'm going to only read what I feel like reading, what draws my attentions.

I'm a writer (there I said it), after my trip and being at UtopYA Con I've learned a few things and it gave me a urge to a point where I want to focus on my WIP and make goals/plans for all thing that make it tough to put a book out. I love my WIP I just need to work on it more and be more dedicated to it and that's what I've been doing since I've gotten back. So that why I won't be reading as much books except for the one I plan to read and if I read other books after that then I REALLY wanted to read it.
