Book Review: Menagerie

MENAGERIE (Menagerie #1) By Rachel Vincent

Menagerie (Menagerie, #1)From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

Review
Menagerie is an out of this world stunning new series by Rachel Vincent.

Delilah Marlow is about to get into a twisted nightmare reality . . .

Living in the Menagerie world, there's no rights, no free will, nothing to call your own except yourself

Come into Menagerie and witness the most amazing show you have ever seen!

Menagerie is dark and creativity written with awe inspiring descriptive details

Can you maintain your sanity?

I give this an Purrrfect rating, I love the details, I love the storyline and I can't wait for more!

MEOW . . .MEOW . . . MEOW
.
Menagerie really has unique elements of mythical creatures that walks in the modern world with a touch of dystopian.  The book has multiple POVs but primary its all focused on Delilah Marlow who learns that she is something that is not ordinary, normal or even classified as a known species.

Struggling with the whirlwind changes, being stuck in an world of grits and grime and no freedom. Delilah need to learn how to readjust and FAST before she ends up somewhere far worst than her current situation.  small size metal cage and being

Menagerie really is unlike anything I have ever read, sure there's books that surrounds mythology and folktales but no one has really harness an descriptive story like Rachel did.  Plus putting it in an circus/carnival theme, Rachel loves writing scary stories. What's scary about Menagerie is that if you're not human then you belong to the Menagerie.

The Menagerie is your worst nightmare . . . Outside of Menagerie it's the most beautiful and unique show you could ever see but what lies behind the scenes?

Other characters you will find have their own unique stories and even strange situations. What would you do to maintain your sanity and your will?

Now because this book was listed mistakenly as an YA, it's not in fact YA. When I read this book part of it was very raw and gut-wrenching almost too much to handle but if you can look past that and enjoy the details as well the wide-range of mythical creatures you never heard of before and it all in one place!

Overall I love this book, I just got my Hardcover copy in today and it's beautiful. I'll for sure reread this book again before Masquerade comes out.

Book Review: The Forbidden Side of Nightshade

Captive: The Forbidden Side of Nightshade (Forbidden Side of Nightshade #1) by

Captive: The Forbidden Side of NightshadeThe first adult novel set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Nightshade series, Captive delivers a steamy, forbidden romance between sworn enemies drawn together by an irrepressible desire.

Twenty-five-year-old Tristan Doran enjoys a life of incredible power and privilege. As a direct descendant of the Keepers—witches who have embraced dark magic—he defers to no one but his overlord, Lord Bosque Mar. For most of his life, Tristan has been kept out of the centuries-old Witches War, his bloodline too valuable to risk in battle.

But when a beautiful, young human Searcher named Sarah is captured and made a prisoner in his Irish castle, Tristan’s infatuation with her flings him headlong into the fray. Captive and captor, unable to contain their longing, embark on a passionate, forbidden romance together—only to learn that their love is at the heart of a prophecy predicting the downfall of the Keepers’ ages-old reign.

Captive explores the darker side of the richly imagined Nightshade universe, a fantasy world of powerful dark witches, shape-shifting wolf warriors, and fascinating history. The first of three erotic novels, Captive delves deeply into the fiery, illicit romance of two young lovers whose very desires invite their doom.

REVIEW
The first ever adult book set in the Nightshade world!!! I'm always excited for popular YA books to convert or have an adult world perspective. There's a lot more you can roam around in . . .

Tristan have dealt with being secluded from the outside world, his family's blood is deemed like royalty and a prophecy that he might be a part of.

Sarah is a searcher on a mission to figure out the Keepers (her enemies) their secrets anything about their weakness and their plans.

Sarah is in someway taken from her mission when she is capture, but what she didn't expect was to have some hidden passion and desires for Tristan.

Tristan doubtfully play games towards Sarah but he too starts to feel something, but can he fall for someone that's suppose to be his enemy?

A.D present a new taste of the Nightshade world and  prophecy that could change everything.

I give this Five Cat's Tails UP, I've been looking forward to this book for awhile and meeting new characters is a huge PLUS! Tristan and Sarah has instant connection and the love that's so forbidden could change everything.

MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW
Wow believe it or not, I really really enjoy this book . . . I was really worry for some reasons that I wouldn't like the adult version of Nightshade but the plots oh my god how insane!

I like the fact that it was a dual Point of View, you could follow Sarah's point of view very clearly as well Tristan's these two have insane chemistry from the beginning although Sarah was a little expose due to a wicked person wanting to embarrassed her.

Sarah is a very ambitious searcher, she took a stand alone mission because she the most trained and experience person facing the dangers. But her biggest threat is not Tristan . . . but it's her heart. Tristan is the same way except he's has to be more careful because of the prophecy that he never believe in until he realizes that it was happening right in front of him.

Now I'm not going to title "Let talk about S-E-X" but really it was very well written, nothing was ever forced to made the characters have the "NEED" and force the scene. The passion grew gradually as one thing lead to another, what I found so cliche was the whole virgin thing and Tristan being a jerk walking away but don't worry I forgave him sort of . . .

Sarah never thought in a million years that she would fall for her enemy or "supposed" enemy but she just couldn't believe that Tristan was bad or evil. Lord Mar was worry about people finding out about Tristan bloodline and use it against him.

They will stand for their love for each other even if they are the prophecy but the battle between the Keepers and Searchers have only just begun.

Review
Lila Grant been waiting forever to finally shine through her culinary graduates but she faces her competition Jack Calabrese the man who has it all and has the family name that does him justice. It true what they say, Chefs never share their secret recipes. Just before the big cook off, Lila and Jack dive into their indulgence and desires but once the cook off started, it was anyone's kitchen. Months later after Lila took off to do her own thing after being upstaged by Jack Calabrese, she hoped she never see that Jack again until now . . . The growing love and hate romance get hotter and it might be too hot for both chefs to handle. A determine Jack wants to rekindle with Lila whenther she denies it or not but Jack also asked of her help with his new restaurant opening and believes his menus aren't good enough. Can these two work together or will it be Chopped?

I give this a 5 Cat's Tails, I love the mixture of food and romance, heck even the whole back and forth arguing about anything and everything that deals with them and food.
Ramble
This book was pretty hot in the kitchen, both Lila and Jack can't deny the chemistry they have together. However Lila still holds a grudge against Jack, will she take this opportunity to sabotage Jack. I love that they both shared the same passion for food, and even the same passion in bed. Lila's intentions were to create chaos for Jack's restaurant but after spending a little more time with him, her perspective changed. Jack has that family dynamics, he has to do everything perfect otherwise his father looks the other way. Jack spent most of his cooking career trying to shine on that is why it was so important that he won the cooking competition but I wonders if he knew of Lila's position and why she was so edger to win.
I like the pace of the book but there were some part where I felt it wasn't needed to fill in the gap, but it was still focused on Lila and Jack. Overall it was an enjoyable read, I like the whole chefs concept because I haven't read anything like this before so it was a new read for me.

I’ve found you, fur ball.

Nexi peered from behind the large oak tree and spotted the small log cabin nestled in the thick forest. The porch light cast a warm glow into the night. Fog settled over the lush grass, and the night was dark, eerie.

Stepping away from her hiding place behind the tree, she strode forward and gripped the dagger tightly in her hand. Keeping the silver blade pointed outward, she climbed the cabin’s porch steps, taking each one slowly to avoid detection.

Once she arrived at the front door, she wrapped her hand around the door handle. Rich hunger for revenge burned in her veins and made her intent on one thing: to slaughter the werewolf who escaped the night of her parents’ murder. Not caring what awaited her, she stormed inside, dagger pointed, ready to kill.

The simple cabin had two large brown couches near a wood-burning stove, a kitchenette behind the living room, and a quilt-covered bed resting in the back. And that was it; there were no other rooms to investigate. No secret hiding places she could see.

No damned werewolf.

She cursed, shut the front door behind her, then trotted down the steps to return to her hiding spot. On her way across the yard, she glanced at the space to the right of the tree, which looked much like a heat wave, indicating that the portal to the Otherworld remained.

In some places around the world—or the Earthworld, as supernaturals had called it—there were permanent portals to the supernatural realm. This portal had only appeared because Nexi had travelled to this cabin from the Otherworld. Once she passed through the portal again, the gateway would vanish.

Magic had its perks. Quick travel was one of them.

Nexi shook her head at how normal all this magical stuff seemed now. Just over a month ago she’d never believed in anything that went bump in the night. Now she knew all those things existed, and in fact, she was one of them.

To her horror, she had learned that her birth mother, Tillie, had been murdered by a power-hungry vampire, Lazarus.  All those years ago, her birth father, Drake, had protectively decided to block Nexi’s supernatural abilities. He had planned for her to live and die as a mortal. Now with her return to the Otherworld and the removal of the block on her true identity, there was no going back.

She was no longer plain, human, Nexi Jones.

She was Nexi Jones, part guardian, part witch.

Looking away from the portal and to her hiding spot until the werewolf returned, she hurried her steps. She wasn’t ready to return to the Otherworld yet. Not until she had the werewolf’s head as her wall ornament would she dare go home.

Just as she neared the tree, a woodsy scent that had nothing to do with the forest mixed with the citrusy aroma of aftershave. A blink of an eye later, the dagger she held was now at her throat, a hard body closed in on her back.
“You smelled lovely when you arrived.” The low voice by her ear held a faint English accent. “But I never imagined you’d be so pretty.”

The blade pressed into her skin, not drawing blood, but implying that if the werewolf chose, she’d be destined for the grave. “I’m…”

“Going to explain yourself.” He lowered the dagger, took hold of her arm, and jerked her forward.

In a few short strides, the werewolf tossed her through the threshold of the cabin, and slammed the door behind them. He sauntered to the couch, sat down, and regarded her. “Now then, darlin’.” His olive skin was stunningly flawless, and his chocolate-colored hair was spiked tall. “Why would a pretty lass like yourself plan to attack me?”

“Don’t move.” That charm wouldn’t fool her. “Stay right where you are.”

“My mouth is the only thing moving.” His slanted amber eyes raked over her. “Would you like me to stop talking?”

“No.” She hesitated then added, “Only your mouth can move. Nothing else. Tell me what you know.”

He gave her a long look. “I’d be glad to tell you anything you’d like, love.”

His kind face and soft voice wouldn’t trick her. He was a werewolf. She was certain, which was another oddity.

After the block on her supernatural abilities had been lifted, she could identify a supernatural creature as if knowing the difference between a brunette and a redhead. “Tell me why you killed my family.”

“That’s an interesting accusation.” He cocked his head, studying her with a frown. “But I think the more important question is who are you?”

Kitty and The Dead Man's Hand Review

Kitty and the Dead Man;s Hand (Kitty Norville #5) By Carrie Vaughn

Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand (Kitty Norville, #5)HONEYMOON IN VEGAS?

Already the alpha pair of Denver's werewolf pack, Kitty and Ben now plan to tie the knot human-style by eloping to Vegas. Kitty is looking forward to sipping fru-fru drinks by the pool and doing her popular radio show on live TV, but her hotel is stocked with werewolf-hating bounty hunters. Elsewhere on the Strip an old-school magician might be wielding the real thing; the vampire community is harboring a dark secret; and the irresistible star of a suspicious animal act is determined to seduce Kitty. Sin City has never been so wild, and this werewolf has never had to fight harder to save not only her wedding, but her very life.

Review
WOW talk about Kitty getting hitched! But getting hitched was the least of her problem, after arriving at the Olympus and Casino. Kitty knew that part of her trip involves a live televise of her radio show "The Midnight Hour" but what she did not expect was there to be a gun show on the very same weekend. After everything that happen in Washington, Kitty been more on edge. So what does Las Vegas has to present her? Her intital plan was to sit by the pool and drink frilly drinks but that doesn't happen when she discover a stage show of shifters, an magic show and Ben getting into a poker tourament? She meet the vampire leader of Las Vegas DOM she also meet Balthasar the owner/leader of "King of Beasts" even a magician named Odysseus Grant who believes every secrets of magic should be kept secret.
Something will always cause mayhem for Kitty

I give this Five Cat's Tails Ups

Ramble
This book was freaking Cat's Tails Ups Amazing! I love the pace of this read compare to last one and having to only focus on a few characters rather than tons by name. You read the interaction with the characters better and Does Kitty make enemies in this book? That I was unsure of except knowing that Balthasar was label as the "bad guy" character along with his pack and a female vampire. Carrie's visual aspect of Las Vegas was probably what Las Vegas is if I were to ever go there.
Now there was suppose to be a wedding right? Well that did eventually happen even though there were a few roadblocks getting to the alter. In the end it turns out that your standard magican was the one to help out and making a few hunters friends might also not be so bad.
But does everything stay in Vegas?

Until Next Time Kitty Norville . . . Where will Trouble come from next?

Lush By Lauren Dane

LUSH (Delicious #3) By Lauren Dane

Lush (Delicious, #3)

Goodreads Discription:
USA Today bestselling author Lauren Dane delivers a second serving of sexy in her new Delicious novel, in which taste and temptation make up a sweet recipe…

Mary Whaley has her hands full running a successful catering company and overseeing her supper club. She has everything she ever wanted—or so she thought. When she meets ridiculously hot and very dirty rock star Damien Hurley at her friend’s engagement party, the attraction she feels is overpowering—and she isn’t about to deny herself.

Damien is used to a hard and fast life. He and two of his brothers started a band when they were fresh out of high school—then they hit the big time and stayed there. He’s also a legendary madman on the stage and in the bedroom. But when he meets Mary, something clicks, and the bad boy starts thinking he may have finally found something good.

What begins as a series of fleeting trysts soon gets much more complicated. Damien can’t figure out why Mary doesn’t want more from him. And before long, it’s Damien who wants more from Mary. But it turns out Mary is no stranger to celebrity news, and he’s got a very big job ahead of him: proving that he’s worth more than a one-night stand…

Review
This sugar and spice book was one of my favorite book to read, how can you not like an concept where there's an ordinary woman and a rock star guy that are drawn to each other. Mary met Damien through a friend's party and one look, one conversation drew these two together. But it wasn't the party that drew Damien to Mary, it was her delicious cooking skills and her passion for food. Damien and his brothers are in a band so good homemade food are hard to come by unless they're back home. But this was suppose to be a one time fling right? But both Mary and Damien just can't deny the chemistry between them and agreed to have a casual thing. Yeah nothing is causal about Damien, he's in the spotlight most of the time and is photographed with dozen of women that will do just about anything for his attention. How does Mary handle that? She keeps reminding herself that it normal and expected but what's a girl going to do when she soon admits that she is falling in love with a Rock Star? Damien has to prove Mary in many ways and surprises her in many ways to show his devotion to Mary but that could all change when the world know about Mary and reporters are making up stories that seem to real to deny. Will Mary and Damien's love survive this spotlight or will it faltered.

I give this book a four tails review . . .
Ramble
I've been a fan of Lauren Dane's de La Vegas Cats and I was hoping to buy more of her other books but I haven't gotten that far. But thankfully NetGallery was providing her "Delicious" series number 3 although I am guilty that I haven't read one or two yet. But a little indulgence doesn't hurt anybody and this one was a sweet and intimidating. Mary has her life in order and is career-driven with her catering and supper club but when Damien a rock star appears during an mutual party . . . staying in the kitchen show you can handle the heat. Damien's love life was always in the spotlight and can be complicated. I like that Damien wanted a normal relationship even if it was a causal thing but I believe both Mary and Damien wanted more. They had common interest, they could talk comfortably and they both enjoyed company (if you know what I mean) They had a near perfect relationship until one photo turn Mary and Damien world into a downhill spiral.  I really hope that their relationship would come back together and it did thankfully. I was also glad that it was Damien that made the move to fix the relationship when Mary did all she could to try to close herself away from Damien. In the end the two were able to work things out and Damien found his dream girl. Mary was finally happy with her life, her career and her relationship with Damien that ended with a proposal.

All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.
Some things are worth experiencing…

She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.
Some things should never be kept quiet…
But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?
