Armchair BEA: Day three

It's Day Three of Armchair BEA

Today Topics are Expanding Blogging Horizons & Novellas/Short Stories

Expanding Blogging Horizons
What do you think about when you think about going beyond blogging or expanding your horizons? Is it a redesign of your blog? Have you branched out into freelance writing or even published a novel of your very own? Or, have you moved into a different venue like podcasts or vlogging? This is the day to tell us about how you have expanded on blogging in your own unique way.

I often think about going beyond blogging, and in a sense expanding my horizons. I am a writer but I haven't done anything in retrospect of publishing. I like to focus on my characters and figuring out what in stores for me, so I'm dedicated to forming this idea to the max. When will I publish or take that next step? I don't know I can't tell, I'd much rather get some beta readers and editors first before trying to either self-publish, go indie or traditional publish. But every one of those is a process.

I would love a resign of my blog, I want all that fanciness some bloggers have and make SassyCat's a Brand essentially. I know you think it weird that I called it a brand but think about it, you got wherever you blog, twitter, FB, tumblr, Goodreads and other social media so yes it's basically a brand of the blogger's world.

Novellas/Short Stories
Now it is time to give a little love to those little stories in your life. Share your love for your favorite shorts of any form. What is a short story or novella that doesn’t get the attention that it deserves? Recommend to readers what shorts you would recommend they start with. How about listing some short story anthologies based upon genres or authors?

Don't get me wrong I enjoy some Short Stories/Novellas but sometimes you wonder if it enough or needed. I read a short story written by Katie McGarry call Red at Night & it was my first 2 starts or two tails up review because I found it dull & to me it didn't create that love story dynamic like her Pushing the Limits series.  But I do want to point out that it was NOT part of the Pushing the Limits series.

Rachel Vincent has 7 books from her Soul Screamers series, so you can expect short stories/Novellas from other characters POV. One was Sabine's POV before SS started, it gave us perceptive on Sabine's story, then there was a Sabine's and partly Emma's story on a trip. Sabine wanted to know her future, if she had a future with Nash because she always believed that Nash was her ONE. That short story gave a twist for the upcoming book of the SS where things for Kaylee changed forever.

We see a side of Kaylee's Cousin Emma and meet a new character that eventually appears more in the full length novels.

The fun little quirky story was "A Day In The Afterlife Of Tod" You really see how hard being a reaper is and what the life of a reaper.  Then when With All My Soul ends readers starts believing that it was the end, that was it of the SS world but Rachel surprise us with a full length novella told in Nash and Tod POV during some of the hardest time in their life during WAMS. I don't want to spoil it for those that haven't read it yet but it was totally worth adding that story.

You can find all those short stories/novellas by Rachel in her Soul Screamers Volumes, 1, 2, 3, & 4

I haven't read much more short stories or novellas but there's tons of them for every series that I read . . . so I got time to either buy them in ebooks or if the publisher decides to make them into mass paperback or paperback.

Armchair BEA: Author Interaction

I interact with authors all the time, whether its on Twitter or Facebook, but Rachel Vincent is usually found on Twitter more than Facebook. If you don't know her here's a little info about Rachel herself,

Photo credit: Kim Haynes PhotographyRachel Vincent is the author of the Shifters series and the Unbound series, from Mira Books, as well as the young adult Soul Screamers series from Harlequin Teen. Upcoming projects include Menagerie, the first in a new series for adults (Mira Books, Sept 30, 2014) and a brand new young adult series coming from Delacorte Press (Random House) in the spring of 2015.
In addition to being a writer and a reader, Rachel is a wife, mother, sister, daughter, cousin, cat lover, horror fan, former high school English teacher, former band nerd, amateur baker, and current lover of all things The Walking Dead (comics, TV show, action figures, and video games). She wears jeans, drinks flavored coffee, and would be completely nocturnal, if her kids didn’t have to get to school in the morning.
Questions for Rachel? You can leave a comment in her blog, or ask her something on Formspring.

Shifters Series[UF/Adult] (6), Unbound Trilogy{UF/Adult] (3) & Soul Screamers [YA] (7)

Rachel Vincent twitter interactions
Rachel is such an awesome author! She constantly tease us with the tiniest snippet of her books, she's the one author that I so want to meet at some point but I love interacting with her on Twitter. Here's a conversation that I had with her in and got her wheels turning.

Here's the headline of our conversation . . . an YA Shifter book. Imagine Faythe Sanders at 16 years old . . .

So yep that was the conversation we had and it was a fun and interactive conversation, even a few other readers jump in as well. I know Rachel is busy working on her new books/series but you never know, she just might surprise us with writing an YA Shifter book.

Armchair BEA: Introduction

Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging? Where in the world are you blogging from?

I'm Kat, the sole blogger of SassyCat's Books Review. I've been blogging for at least two years however SassyCat's Books Review has it's first blogaversary back in March, I was using a different blog that I retired and created SassyCat's Books Review. I'm blogging from Wisconsin, USA

Describe your blog in just one sentence. Then, list your social details -- Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. -- so we can connect more online.

Think like a Cat, Acts like a Cat, Meow like a Cat.

 Where you can find me,
Facebook Page [TBD]

What does your favorite/ideal reading space look like? (Pinterest encouraged!)
Its so funny that this question was asked, although I don't have the space or the money you can always dream & imagine. Here's a few pinterest that drew my attention of my ideal reading space.(I'm having trouble copying the photos of my pins and pasting it on here)
I titled it SassyCat's Blogger Corner

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 books would you bring? Why? What 3 non-book items would you bring? Why?
If I got stranded . . . such a fun question!
3 Non-book items
  • MP3 Player (I always need my music)
  • Ipad
  • Water (Hey I'm stranded on a Island, I'll need fresh water)
3 Book Items
  • Rise by Andrea Cremer
  • If Kristin Miller's Seattle Wolf Pack series was in an volume book then I MUST HAVE THAT
  • Soul Screamer Volume 3, If I DIE AND BEFORE I WAKE were two of the most gut-wrenching moments for Kaylee and they were also my favorite out of all 7
What book would you love to see as a movie?
Can TV shows be counted as well?
I love all of Rachel Vincent's books since her Shifters series and Soul Screamers are hers longest books series that they would be great for TV series, the shifters would have to be on ScFy or a channel that allows adult context and materials.
I hope that one of these days that Andrea Cremer's Nightshade books will be turn into a movie, I mean it just so popular and it the teens would love it!
There's a couple other books that I would love to be converted into a movie or a tv show, but I can't possibly list them all.

Follow my next post on Literature discussion HERE

The Cat's Meow: Countdown to UToPYA

24 Days
WOW where did the time go? We're under a month to go before it's UtopYa Con Time!

I'm so excited to be coming and attending, I can't wait to meet everyone face to face now I know some are arriving Thursday don't worry I'll be there too! I really look forward to a lot of things Thursday night but I'll be sad at the same time . . . If many of you don't know I'm taking two trips.

Before I come to Nashville I will be in North Carolina to visit my dear & very pregnant friend, it so exciting but nerve-wreaking because she will be close to her due date when I see her so pretty much she could have her baby when I'm there to visit her!

So what have I done so far in prep for UtopYa Con?
well I've done many things, routing/mapping the direction to Nashville as well to NC. My mom and I will soon be booking our hotels that we're staying at in NC and Springfield, IL (did I mention I'm traveling by car & my mom and I are going to see Abe Lincoln museum first before our big driving trip)

I have pre-ordered some books through the group page and the Pre-order doc that I created to make everyone's life easier and to track down all authors that are offering pre-orders. I'm still working on some more pre-order but I'm fighting the budget as well...

I've order books through Barnes & Noble that I will be bringing along with me, plus I will be bringing books that I currently owned as well. Let's say I'm bring books with me but I'll be bringing a lot more books home with me :-)

I'm sure you heard of the Reader Abduction Party Thursday night, the tickets went out fast but don't worry I snagged one for me and my mom, but if she doesn't want to go with me then I will ask someone who didn't get it and I know two contender already.

Are you ordering Brag Book? It's For YOU to get so that way every single authors attending will sign your brag book even though you might or might not buy their books. At least you would get every single Author's signatures :-) Here's the link http://www.lotusopus.com/#!product/prd1/2169086445/%23bragbook

Let's talk PACKING!
I'm not even close to packing, let's say I'm even 100% sure what clothes to pack! Plus I want to be sure that every outfit that I may/may not wear between now and before we leave will be washed. So clothes will be taken care of the week of our departure.

There's some stuff that I want to buy before hands because one I really need some more pairs.

My mom and I are from Wisconsin, so we will be bringing our own cheese (no we didn't make them it will be store brought from a local cheese place) We're bringing our own beers and some food for the road . . . We are preparing for everything.

So how about you? What have you done so far and are you ready for the best time of your bookish life?

Cover Reveal

You know you love it when there's a huge cover reveal of your favorite southern gal Rose Gardner of the Rose Gardner Series.Well now the wait is over, but first look back at all of the journeys Rose had in preparation of the upcoming adventure Rose will face in Thirty-Two and a Half Complications.

Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes (Rose Gardner Mystery, #1)“It all started when I saw myself dead.”

For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She’s had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone’s toilet’s overflowed, but she’s never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa instead, two things are certain: There isn’t enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.

Rose realizes she’s wasted twenty-four years of living and makes a list on the back of a Wal-Mart receipt: twenty-eight things she wants to accomplish before her vision comes true. She’s well on her way with the help of her next door neighbor Joe, who has no trouble teaching Rose the rules of drinking, but won’t help with number fifteen– do more with a man. Joe’s new to town, but it doesn’t take a vision for Rose to realize he’s got plenty secrets of his own.

Somebody thinks Rose has something they want and they’ll do anything to get it. Her house is broken into, someone else she knows is murdered, and suddenly, dying a virgin in the Fenton County jail isn’t her biggest worry after all.

Twenty-Nine and a Half Reasons (A Rose Gardner Mystery, #2)

When Rose reports for Fenton County jury duty she figures she’s lucky to get out of a morning working at the DMV. Instead, despite a disastrous encounter with the new assistant district attorney, Mason Deveraux, she’s picked as a juror on a murder case. As the trial progresses, she realizes an ominous vision she had in the men’s restroom proves the defendant is innocent. And there’s not a cotton picking thing she can do about it.

Or is there?

As if things weren’t bad enough, Rose’s older sister Violet is going through a mid-life crisis. Violet insists that Rose stop seeing her sexy new boyfriend, Arkansas state detective Joe Simmons and date other men. Rose is done letting people boss her around, but she can’t commit to Joe either. Still, Rose isn’t about to let the best thing in her life slip away.

Thirty and a Half Excuses (Rose Gardner Mystery, #3)

Life in Henryetta, Arkansas is turned upside down with the arrival of a televangelist, but it’s the death of a little old lady on Rose’s street that catches her attention. The Henryetta police deem her death natural causes, but Rose suspects foul play and so does an unlikely supporter–-the president of the Busy Body Club, her eighty-two year old neighbor Mildred.

But Rose is in the middle of opening her nursery with her sister Violet, who’s separated from her husband Mike, as well as stalling her boyfriend Joe’s family, rich socialites who are determined to meet her. Along with her multiple encounters with Fenton County’s new assistant DA, Mason Deveraux III, it’s just another day in the life of Rose Gardner–-chaos.

Thirty-One and a Half Regrets (Rose Gardner Mystery, #4)While Rose recovers from a broken heart, she finds herself at odds with her sister—and business partner—Violet. Rose buries herself in her landscaping work, but becomes worried when her employee and friend, Bruce Wayne Decker, goes missing.

In the meantime, Fenton County assistant D.A., Mason Deveraux has been patiently waiting to begin a relationship with Rose, but she realizes she needs to confront the demons of her past before she can embrace a new future. She needs to find out the truth about her birth mother.

But her past isn’t her only demon. An undercurrent of tension has been spreading through Henryetta, Arkansas since drug lord, Daniel Crocker’s arrest six months ago. Still, she’s not prepared for a nightmare come true: Crocker’s escape from prison. Crocker carries a grudge and he’s determined to make Rose pay, but he plays a game of cat and mouse, forcing Mason and the Fenton County Sheriff’s department to hide Rose on her birth mother’s farm. But will it be enough to save her?

And Now it's time for the Reveal of the next book of the Rose Gardner Series,
Thirty-Two and a Half Complications

About Thirty-Two and a Half Complications

There’s no denying trouble finds Rose Gardner like a divining rod finds water, especially when Rose lands in the middle of a bank robbery. But after the robbers steal her deposit bag—containing a large amount of cash—she soon finds out that trouble is threatening her business as well, thanks to her sister Violet’s financial mismanagement,.

To top it off, Rose’s ex-boyfriend, Joe Simmons, has moved back to Henryetta to fill the chief deputy sheriff position. Rose’s involvement as a witness is the perfect opportunity for Joe to reinsert himself into her life. But Mason Deveraux, Fenton County Assistant District Attorney and Rose’s new boyfriend, has waited too long for Rose to give her up without a fight.

Rose’s pregnant best friend, Neely Kate, suggests they find the robbers using Rose’s visions and Neely Kate’s knowledge about everyone in town. The women are soon hot on the trail of the stolen money, but Rose is caught off guard when Neely Kate’s snoopiness detects the biggest complication of all: Rose might be expecting a baby of her own.

Kitty Blitz: Tease Trailer Reveal

TEASE (The Ivy Chronicles #2) by Sophie Jordan

Tease (The Ivy Chronicles, #2)What happens when a girl who always calls the shots meets a guy who's too wild for even her?

A born flirt and good-time party girl, Emerson has never had a problem finding a willing guy. She's always chosen her hookups carefully, and she's never broken her three cardinal rules:

Never let them see the real you.
Never fall in love.
Always leave them begging for more.

Then Shaw comes along. A hottie from the wrong side of the tracks, he's immune to her flirtatious banter and come-hither smile. After rescuing her from a disastrous night at a biker bar, he doesn't even try to take her to bed—he calls her a tease and sends her home instead. Unable to resist a challenge, or forget the sexy, dark-eyed, bad-boy biker, she vows to bring him to his knees.

But instead of making Shaw beg, Emerson finds herself craving him. For the first time in her life, she's throwing out her rule book. Suddenly, she's the one panting for a guy she can't control—a guy who won't settle for anything less than the real Emerson and who forces her to do things she's never imagined, including facing a past she thought she'd buried.

When the apple harvest draws near and the Greater’s engineered fruits become too much for one village to handle alone, reinforcements from neighboring villages are called upon.
Having to choose between her best friend, whom she has no romantic feelings for, and mysterious newcomer Crew, Abby finds herself in the middle of a harvest that she had no intention of becoming a part of. She becomes involved in a situation that threatens the strict rule of the Greaters, and just might give the Lessers hope for a better tomorrow. But, can she help the Lessers without losing Crew? And if she chooses Crew, will she lose her best friend?
REAP Excerpt:
Something was touching my face, caressing my cheek. The skin that brushed mine was rough, hardened by the work we all share. Am I dreaming? I waited, trying to see if this was real or part of a dream. Whichever it was, it was nice, comforting.
Rough fingertips moved over the parts of my back that weren’t split open and packed with gunk. I sucked in a breath and held it. This was real. I moved my head and saw his silhouette against the candlelight flickering in from the kitchen and living room. “Ky?” My voice was raspy and barely sounded like my own. Sleep and exhaustion filled every chord.
“Shh. I’m here.” Suddenly, I was very aware that I was lying shirtless on my bed. Even though, I was on my stomach, that didn’t help me feel any less naked in front of my best friend, who happened to be a member of the male species—a very fine male specimen according to my girlfriends.
I knew he was handsome. I wasn’t blind. But, I didn’t see him like that. He’d dated many of my friends and now was getting ready to marry Paige Winters in just a few weeks, after the harvest was complete and the orchards picked bare. His fingertips trace the in-tact skin between my shoulder blades and I tensed under his touch.
He’d kissed my head and temple and hugged me more times than I can count, but this was somehow different. This was more intimate. His touch was delicate, gentle compared to his normal strength and anything but playful. “Ky?”
He didn’t answer. His fingers explored my back, careful not to stray too close to the wounds that streaked across my skin. “Kyan?”
“Shut up, Abby. Just let me... Just shut up.” He’d never talked to me like this. His voice was raspy and he’d never, ever told me to shut up before. So I did. I wasn’t sure why. He shouldn’t have been touching my skin. Shouldn’t have been caressing the good parts left of me, but sitting with me in the dark, he was doing exactly that and I was allowing it.
Paige would be furious if she saw us now. She’d always had a jealous streak, had always hated any girl who dated or flirted with Ky. Lately, she told anyone and everyone who will listen that Kyan was hers and that she hated me with a passion. She wasn’t lying. She hated me. Rather, she hated my relationship with Ky. He was my best friend. I wasn’t interested in him as anything more or anything else. I’d told her that. He’d told her that a million times. But, she refused to listen, adamant that I wanted him for myself, adamant that he wanted me.
I honestly didn’t have those types of feelings for Kyan. I never have had them. Ever. And up until now, I’d always thought he felt the same. But feeling his fingers exploring my skin made even me question that sentiment. And it scared me to death.

The Cat's Meow: Shine Series

Shade by Jeri Smith-ReadyShift by Jeri Smith-ReadyShine by Jeri Smith-Ready

This is my second series read of 2014! Sadly I'm getting so drawn into the new releasing books and I've gotten a couple ARCs.

Jeri's Shade series have been sitting in my TBR pile since early 2012, I can't recall how I came across hearing about her books or if someone recommended the books to me. I know I wasn't on twitter(at least I think) But I had gotten a chance to meet her . . . Way back in May 2013, I can't believe a whole year has gone by!

Jeri became my second official Author that I have met, I've met Andrea Cremer multiple times but it was nice to finally get to meet someone new.

SO onto about her Shade series, Shade was focused around where people that were born after the "SHIFT" could see and talk to ghost, and then there were others that was born before the "SHIFT" and were called Pre-Shift, not always able to communicate with the ghosts or see them.

Aura was one of those that could see and talk to ghosts, most time she chose to ignore it until they start screaming at her in the face and while she is trying to live as much of a normal life as she can, but Aura wanted so badly to not speak or see ghosts until . . . her boyfriend dies. Then it seems that she didn't lose him entirely but it was getting harder to face what was real and what wasn't real.

Aura's boyfriend Logan was the most cliche boyfriend I have ever read, the musician boyfriend . .. The pressure of becoming famous. Then it became hard for Aura to let go of Logan and facing the reality of real life and Zachary.

Did I mention that this is taken in Baltimore? No . . . Maybe? Well here are some photos I have from my trip to Baltimore.

Some of my Favorite scenes and passages,
SHADE
I love the day Zach and Aura spent together at the pier, it took me right back to my trip I had in Summer 2013 and I even did a tour of historical ships, the only one I miss was the lighthouse but we started getting some bad weather. I even love the part where they run and hide from the DWP and they share their first kiss only to get caught by Zach's dad.

SHIFT
Running from the DWP in the woods all by themselves, those scenes were sweet but also adventurous the very first time they ever spent alone for one night.

I love and hate the prom passage, first it was the most sweetest thing and then it became the most worst thing. First Aura couldn't decide if she could go to prom with Zachary when she still had envision going with Logan until he die. Of course Zach is heart broken, feeling that he's competing against a dead guy. Then aura wants to go to prom with Zach but is rejected and Zachary prom date was the girl Aura always had been bullied by and Zach's date had other plans and thought it would be nice to try and rubbed it in her face via phone dialing.

SHINE
Everything of their alone time in a castle bed & breakfast, and touring Ireland was my highlight of the book. I love when characters are sent to other places in the world and that makes it more intriguing to make me travel to those places like Ireland.

I love when Aura finally learns about her father since he was a missing piece of her and a missing piece to her mother. It gave Aura a peace of mind knowing who he is and what he was, realizing that he was the key to what made the SHIFT happens.

Overall thought on the series?
I like it because it was different, it didn't fall under the norm of what YA been bringing and I hope that more author might be interested in writing more YA ghost/paranormal/Spirits aspect. I think there could be more expansion of where ghosts and spirits can become YA or even NA. Can you imagine reading Aura and Zach in an NA genre? Would the theme and pace be different or would it ruin the whole innocence of the characters?

Book Review: Uninvited

Uninvited (Uninvited #1) by Sophie Jordan

Uninvited (Uninvited, #1)The Scarlet Letter meets Minority Report in bestselling author Sophie Jordan's chilling new novel about a teenage girl who is ostracized when her genetic test proves she's destined to become a murderer.

When Davy Hamilton's tests come back positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome (HTS)-aka the kill gene-she loses everything. Her boyfriend ditches her, her parents are scared of her, and she can forget about her bright future at Juilliard. Davy doesn't feel any different, but genes don't lie. One day she will kill someone.

Only Sean, a fellow HTS carrier, can relate to her new life. Davy wants to trust him; maybe he's not as dangerous as he seems. Or maybe Davy is just as deadly.

The first in a two-book series, Uninvited tackles intriguing questions about free will, identity, and human nature. Steeped in New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan's trademark mix of gripping action and breathless romance, this suspenseful tale is perfect for fans of James Patterson, Michelle Hodkin, and Lisa McMann.

Hardcover, 384 pages

Published January 28th 2014 by HarperTeen

Book Review
What would you do if you have the killer gene? The gene that defines who you're going to be no matter what. Davy's life was perfect until the genetic test that turned her world upside down, now she faces a new school, new threats, new rules.

Uninvited brings a new perceptive of how genetics could define who you are, no matter if it was nature or nurture.

Davy will have to prove not only herself but to others that she is not what the genetics say she is, but one wrong move will mark her for life.  Can Davy survive the new world, new rules?

Uninvited is a twisting new thriller that put you on the edge of your seat, wondering will genetics be the new identifier for anything.

I love this book! That it such a PUURFECT, the whole idea of having a killer gene is brillant! I can't wait for book two and see what Davy's life has in stores.

MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW
When I heard about this book, it went on the top of my list to read/buy when it came out however I pushed and pushed myself to wait on buying this book. Then unexpectely a month later or so I finally read it.

Davy is just your average girl with big dreams and big hopes but the world isn't perfect it didn't matter where or how you grew up, if you have the killer gene you were automatically identify as a threat to society and everyone around you. I felt so bad for Davy to have to be define by something that lies in her genetic coding, something she has no control over and everything she once knew was out the window.

The new school that hosts teenagers with the killer gene was a small and very weird diverse group, one her first day she learns that the teacher is a pervert needless to say. Some were actually social to one another and one was the brooding handsome, quiet, bad-news named Sean.

While Davy hadn't display any behavioral or change in personally, the government set very high rules one wrong move and you're marked, one wrong decision you are sent to jail. While Davy struggle with the reality of the fact her then boyfriend try to deal with the situation but then pushed her to her edge when he cross a line and then another student decided to used the breakup as collateral against Davy.

Davy ends up being marked, the most horrify experience and I just want to shout that it wasn't her fault by any means, her shit-head ex boyfriend embarrassed her in front of a whole crowd at a party and she felt hurt more than anything so it was instinct to do what she did but because she was label with the killer gene that made her actions as indication that the violence was only the beginning with her.

Now Sean drew me in from the start, I wanted to know his story aside from his genetics being label as a killer but Sean has already been marked and that drew Davy towards him as well. Sean has no reason to be protective of Davy but yet he did. He was there after Davy got marked, and he was really to be there for her when they enter the camp.

The ending/cliff hanger couldn't have been any better . . . escaping the camp and being fugitives on the run but at least they're free for now.
