Release date: August 16, 2016
Publisher: Delacorte Press

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Description...

For fans of Cassandra Clare and Richelle Mead comes the unputdownable sequel to The Stars Never Rise, a book Rachel Caine, author of the bestselling Morganville Vampires series, called “haunting, unsettling, and eerily beautiful.”

ONE SPARK WILL RISE. Nina Kane was born to be an exorcist. And since uncovering the horrifying truth—that the war against demons is far from over—seventeen-year-old Nina and her pregnant younger sister, Mellie, have been on the run, incinerating the remains of the demon horde as they go.

In the badlands, Nina, Mellie, and Finn, the fugitive and rogue exorcist who saved her life, find allies in a group of freedom fighters. They also face a new threat: Pandemonia, a city full of demons. But this fresh new hell is the least of Nina’s worries. The well of souls ran dry more than a century ago, drained by the demons secretly living among humans, and without a donor soul, Mellie’s child will die within hours of its birth.
Nina isn’t about to let that happen . . . even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

The Excerpt

Here's an excerpt from the first chapter of the first book in the series THE STARS NEVER RISE...

The Grab-n-Go was playing the national news feed. The only other choice was the local news, which repeated on a much shorter, more annoying loop. Still, I kind of felt sorry for the night clerk, sentenced to listen to the same headlines repeated hour after hour, with few customers to break the monotony.

I couldn’t actually hear the newscaster, in her purple Church cassock with the broad, gold-embroidered cuffs, but I could tell what she was saying because in the absence of actual breaking news, newscasters all said the same things. Tithes are up. Reports of demonic possession are at an all-time low. Our citizens are safe inside their steel cages—I mean, walls. The battle still rages overseas and degenerates still roam the badlands, but the Church is vigilant, both at home and abroad, for your safety.

It had been more than a century since the Unified Church and its army of exorcists wiped the bulk of the great demon horde from the face of the earth—the face of America, anyway—yet the headlines never changed.

I stuck to the shadows, walking along the windowless side of the convenience store. Old posters tacked to the brick wall read “Put your talents to work for your country—consider serving the Church!” and “Report suspicions of possession—the Church needs your eyes and ears!” and “Tithe generously! Every dime makes a difference!”

That last one was especially funny. As if tithing were optional. My mom owed several thousand in overdue tithes, from back when she was still working, and if the Church came looking for it, we were screwed.

Behind the store, I rolled the top of the bag tighter to protect the clothes inside, then tossed my bundle over the six-foot chain-link fence stretched across the width of the alley, shielding the Grab-n-Go’s industrial trash bin from casual dumping by the adjoining neighborhood. My neighborhood.

The bag landed with the crunch of gravel and the crinkle of thick paper. I had the toe of one sneaker wedged into the chain-link, my fingers already curled around cold metal, when I heard a rustle from the deep shadows at the other end of the alley. I froze, listening. Something scraped concrete in the darkness.

I let go of the fence and took a step back, my heart thudding in my ears.

Dog. But it’d have to be a big one.

Bum. But there weren’t many of those anymore—the Church had been taking them off the street and conscripting them into service for more than a decade.

Psycho. There were still plenty of those, and my mom seemed to know them all. But half past five in the morning was early, even for most psychos.

Something shuffled closer on the other side of the fence, and I saw movement in the shadows. My fists clenched and unclenched. My pulse whooshed in my ears, and I regretted throwing Sarah’s clothes over the fence. I regretted not taking the even longer way home, through the park. I regretted having a mother who couldn’t shake off chemical oblivion in order to feed and clothe her children.

The thing shuffled forward again, and two pinpoints of light appeared in the darkness, bright and steady. Then they disappeared. Then reappeared.

Something was blinking. Watching me.

Shit! I glanced at the paper bag through the fence, clearly visible in the moonlight, just feet from deep shadows cast by the building. Deep shadows hiding . . . a dog.

It’s just a dog. . . . It had to be. People’s eyes don’t shine in the dark.

You know whose eyes do shine in the dark, Nina? Degenerates’.

My pulse spiked. There hadn’t been a confirmed possession in New Temperance in years, and the last time a degenerate made it over the city wall, I was in the first grade.

It’s a dog.

No stray dog was going to scare me away from a bag of uniforms that cost more than I could make in six months of washing and pressing them. That wouldn’t just be the end of my work for the Turners, it would be the end of Marta’s work for the Turners and the beginning of my conviction for the sin of stealing. Or falsehood. Or whatever they decided to call borrowing and laundering someone else’s clothes under false pretenses.

I stepped up to the chain-link, mentally berating myself for being such a coward. I was halfway up the fence when the shuffling started again, an uneven gait, as if the dog—or the shiny-eyed psycho?—was injured and dragging one foot. I could hear it breathing now, a rasping, whistling sound, not unlike my own ragged intake of air. I was breathing too fast.

My hands clenched the fence, and metal dug into my fingers. I froze, caught between fear and determination. Injured dogs don’t approach strangers unless they’re sick or hungry. It couldn’t get through the fence. But I needed those clothes!

One more shuffle-scrape on concrete and a shape appeared out of the shadows. My throat closed around a cry of terror.

Part human, part monster, the creature squatted, a tangle of knees and elbows, stringy muscles shifting beneath grayish skin. The limbs were too long and too thin, the angles too sharp. The eyes were too small, but they shone with colorless light that seemed to see deep inside me, as if it were looking for something I wasn’t even sure I had.

Degenerate.

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

The Excerpt

Here's a sneak peek from chapter two of THE FLAME NEVER DIES...

“What’s your name, sweetheart?” Ana asked the boy, and I realized there would be no teaching her caution where children were concerned. She had spent five years as a grade-school teacher.

“Tobias.” The boy’s voice was soft and hoarse, as if he’d been crying. His gaze slid from Anabelle to me, and I decided the glazed look in his eyes was from shock.

He reminded me of the kindergartners I’d spent my service hour with every day of my senior year, until the Church had declared me a cancerous wart on mankind’s collective hind end. Tobias could have been any kid in my class, terrified and traumatically orphaned.

We couldn’t leave him alone in the badlands. Yet ours was no life for a kid.

The irony in that thought hit home when my sister waddled past me, one hand on her huge belly. “Melanie,” I called, but she waved off my warning. When I glanced at Finn, he nodded to give me the all clear, the rifle still aimed at the ground. He’d inspected the car from the outside and squatted to peer beneath it, and had found no immediate danger.

Still, Mellie was too pregnant to fight or to flee from sudden danger, so I followed her, ready to pull her out of the path of evil should a demon burst from the bloody car.

“Are you okay, Tobias?” my sister asked, kneeling in front of the child with Anabelle’s help.

For a moment he only stared at her, studying her pale skin and even paler hair. Finally he nodded, his gaze fixated on her stomach, while I tried to calculate the mileage his family must have traveled in that doomed blue car. “You got a baby in there?”

Melanie laughed, and I marveled at the fact that she could find joy where the rest of us saw only tragedy and hardship. “Yes. And I like your name, Tobias.” She laid one hand on her stomach. “Maybe I’ll borrow it if this little one’s a boy.”

Assuming it lived.

Melanie was a tireless optimist, not blind to the dangers of the world, exactly, but not quite concerned enough about them. She refused to think about the overwhelming odds against her child’s survival, and neither she nor Ana had even glanced at the carnage inside that blue car.

And I hadn’t heard her mention Adam, the ill-fated father of her child, in weeks.

Reese pulled the SUV to a stop beside our truck, right in the middle of the road, and the other half of our group poured out of the vehicle. “What the hell?” Footsteps crunched in the dirt behind me, and then Reese and Grayson stopped at my side. She carried a plastic jug and he had a hose wrapped around his massive left arm.

“Looks like the parents are dead in the front seat,” I whispered. “Not sure what happened yet, but Finn hasn’t found any immediate threat.”

“Poor thing!” Grayson cried.

Devi rolled her eyes and scuffed her boot in the dirt on the side of the road. “What the hell are we supposed to do with him?”

“We can’t leave him here.” Maddock threaded his arm through hers, frowning as he watched the little boy. “It’s a miracle he’s still alive. He must not have been here long.”

“We’re not even going to think about taking him with us until we know what killed his parents.” Devi circled the car toward the driver’s side and used one hand to shield the sun from her face while she bent to peer through the window. When she stood a second later, she looked sick. “Nothin’ but blood.”

While the rest of us took a closer look at the car, Grayson, Ana, and Mellie lured Tobias toward the cargo truck with promises of water and chocolate from a box of sweets that had been intended for the general store in New Temperance.

As Devi and Finn had said, the front windows were too caked with blood to show anything at all, and through the rear windshield we could see little more than the outlines of two bodies sitting in the front seats. The trunk door stood open a couple of inches, and when I lifted it, I saw that the narrow center seat had been folded down, creating a small path into the trunk from the backseat of the car. A path just wide enough for a six-year-old.

My stomach twisted at the thought of what Tobias must have witnessed. How could any kid see that much carnage without being psychologically destroyed?

When the child was out of sight behind the cargo truck, Maddock opened the driver’s door while Finn aimed his rifle at the interior just in case. Nothing jumped out at us, but after one glance inside I gasped and stepped back. Finn’s jaw tightened, and even Devi covered her mouth in horror.

The man and woman, still buckled into the front seats of the car, were drenched in blood fresh enough to glisten in the afternoon sunlight. The dashboard, windows, windshield, and floorboard had all been heavily splattered with what could only have been an arterial spray.

Yet even through all the gore, two things were clear.

First, the man and woman in the blue car were not Tobias’s biological parents—their skin was as pale as mine, even accounting for the pallor of recent death. And second, based on the blood and bits of flesh caking their right hands, the couple’s wounds appeared to be self-inflicted.

The man and woman had simply pulled onto the side of the road, then ripped out their own throats.

EXCERPT

My fingers tightened around the slender remote. “I was thinking that if the prince can sense me, why hasn’t he showed up here?”
“I don’t know.” Tink came down to the coffee table and started marching across it. I’m not the prince, but if I was the prince, I’d be buying time.”
“Buying time?” I scooted to the edge of the couch.
“Yeah, because he’s got to win you over.” Tink swiped up the straw he’d had in his Coke. It was nearly the size of him. “That’s basically what he has to do if he wants to impregnate you.”
I cringed, like a full body cringe. “Please do not use the word impregnate ever again.”
“Why? That’s what he wants to do.” He started dancing with the straw, the kind of dancing you see in the clubs. Hips gyrating all over the place. “He knows coercing or tricking you isn’t going to get the deed done, so he’s probably trying to learn how not to be a sexed up dickhead.”
              “Sexed up dickhead?” I repeated.
“Uh-huh.” Tink dipped the straw as one would a dancer. “Remember when I was telling you how I saw the prince getting it on with three females once? He’s totes sexed up. And he’s a dickhead. In other words, he has no empathy or compassion. No humanity.”
              “Most fae don’t.”
Tink twirled the straw. “Yeah, but the ancients are worse. They’re as far away from human as you can get. He’s going to have to work on wooing you.”
I slowly shook my head. “That’s…” There were no words.
“That’s what I’d do.” Tink dropped the straw and whipped around toward me. “Or he’s plotting something major and any moment he’s going to knock down the front door and storm the place.”
“Wow.” A fine shiver curled down my spine. “That’s really a relaxing thought.”
He zipped over to the couch and sat on the arm. He tipped his head back and stared up at me. “Don’t worry. I’m here to protect you.”
I just looked at him, because other than ordering shit off of Amazon, the only strength he had was the unique ability to annoy the crap out of me while somehow still managing to be endearing.
Tink grinned. “Trust me, Ivy. The Prince is not going to want to mess with me.”

Book Blurb:
I don’t believe in destiny.
In fate.
Or in soul mates.
But I believe in Hawke.
My life has never been whole since my parents left forever. I have my brother, someone I can barely tolerate most of the time, and I have my best friend, Marie.
And I have myself.
But when Hawke walks into my life, there’s an immediate connection. Our eyes lock and an unspoken conversation is exchanged. For the first time in my life, I actually feel something.
But he doesn’t.
He keeps me at arm’s length and pretends there’s nothing between us when there clearly is. I’m not the kind of girl to wait around for any guy, so I don’t.
But that doesn’t mean he isn’t in the back of my mind.
Our paths cross again in a way neither one of us expect and it changes everything. Was it destiny that made it happen? Was it fate?
Or was it something else?

EXCERPT:

My phone rang and Hawke’s name was on the screen. I forgot to call him and tell him I’d be late. “Hello?”
“I know you’re late to everything but…a phone call would have been nice.” He was half teasing me, half being serious. “I’m sorry. I got a flat tire, and I’ve been trying to change it.” “What?” he barked.

“Dude, this is really hard. I’ve been out here for an hour and a half.” Instead of laughing, he growled.
“Are you kidding me right now?” Did I miss something? “What?” “Why didn’t you call me? I can change a tire in two seconds.”

“I thought I could figure it out until…I realized I couldn’t.” “It’s freezing outside and it’s dark. Are you stupid?” Now I growled back. “You don’t need to be a dick.” “I’m going to be a dick when your head is shoved up your ass. Now where are you so I can come and get you?” “I can change the tire on my own.” “Clearly.” “How will I ever learn if you don’t let me figure it out?”

“I could teach you. Did you think of that, smartass?” He was practically screaming at me over the phone. “If you’re going to throw a hissy fit, I’m going to hang up.” “You better not—” Click. I set my phone down and got back to work. He called back in two seconds. I sighed then answered. “What?” “Tell me where you are.” “So you can come down here and yell at me?”

“So I can change your tire. Now spit it out.” “I’m almost done. I can figure it out.” “You’re really pissing me off,” he snapped. “Tell me where you are or—” Click. He called back immediately. He was such a drama queen. “What?” I yelled.

“HANG UP ON ME AGAIN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.” I rolled my eyes and stayed mute. “Now tell me where you are before I search the streets.” I looked around and tried to find a street name. “I’m at Gettysburg Park. I’m right at the curb.” Now he hung up on me. Click.

We been waiting, what feels like forever for Lying, Cheating Heart. Now that's it's here the stakes are higher than ever before.

Cassandra has a lot of eyes on her, a lot of expectations but all Cassie wants to do is crawl into a hole and pretend that not everything is weighed on her. Now that the four house of queens are attending ULV, the danger isn't far from them.

Cassie and A.J relationship seem to grown more strain this time around, with A.J being the next one in line for the House of Midas. A.J seems to be taking more of his duties more serious than his own relationship with Cassie which leaves her feeling like she's not important.

My opinion on this relationship, while I love them together in Enchanted Heart I grew to dislike A.J very quickly because of his actions. Actions speak louder than words. Even in the end of of Lying, Cheating Heart I feel that their relationship is over.
For the time being.

There's a lot of twists in sides in Lying, Cheating Heart which makes me wonder who is trustworthy and who is not?

We do meet a few new characters that I think will be playing a big role in the next upcoming book for Game of Hearts.

I give this 4.5 Cat Paws, I really enjoyed Lying, Cheating Heart, the world that Mindy structured I can now imagine why she waited to release this book. You have to get the right details right in order for the world of the book to make sense.

Excerpt of Lying, Cheating Heart

Wind pulled at my hair, lashing the ends into my face as we made the drive back to the dorms. It was too much to talk about. My sister, Cara, had her secrets with Mr. Bones, and I had mine with Yayati. He knew about me years ago and never told Midas. It was one thing to water down a fact; it was another to completely defy the House of Midas.
Why?
Why would he risk it?
Cara pulled the car into the Dayton Complex parking structure, pressed a button to bring the top up, and killed the engine.
Cara finally broke the silence. “I’m not looking for bonding moments and giggles over hot chocolate.”
“I’m not looking for that, either. I’d just like a civil relationship with my sister.”
“Half,” she corrected me.
“You and Carina are all the family I have in this world.” The words caught on the lump in my throat. “You’re my sister.” My hand covered hers. I didn’t miss her flinch at my touch. “I didn’t mean to ruin your life, especially when your very presence saves mine.”
Finally, her round honey eyes found mine, so much uncertainty churning. I wanted her to trust me. I squashed the warm tingle climbing up my back. I needed this to be because she wanted to be my sister, not because I’d commanded her under my powers.
Cara’s eyes broke away. “Thank you for stopping.”
“You felt that?”
She nodded.
“What . . .?” My question trailed off. Maybe I didn’t want to know what it felt like. Maybe it was painful from the beginning. Gods knew, it could be physically damaging.
“It’s like I’m being forced out of my mind. Nothing belongs to me.” Cara folded her hands in her lap, studying her polished nails before she spoke up again. “I could hear you.”
“You could?” I whispered.
“You want me to want to be your sister.” She turned and looked at me, really looked at me. A small bead of sweat dribbled down the side of her face. “Then it got all muddled and I was back. Back in control.”
I sank into the leather seat, the need to confess more stifling than the heat.
“I went after Helen this morning.”
Cara turned the car on and kicked up the air, then turned in her seat toward me. “I was wondering when that was going to happen. Spill.”
Half a dozen "fuck mes" later, Cara and I left the car and headed back to our dorm rooms. Laughter and splashing from the pool sprayed over the bougainvillea-lined rails around the pool and barbeque area of our dorms.
“What are you doing today?” I asked.
“Not sure. I have shit to do.” Cara pulled open the lobby doors. She waved to a group of girls coming out. “I’m sure you do, too. A.J. probably needs help before he leaves.”
“Found that one out today, too.”
Cara punched the up button and leveled me with a look before saying, “I know you want to give this sister thing a try.” She held up a hand, stopping me. “So this is my contribution. A.J. may be your Jack, but he’s the heir to the House of Midas first. Beaux’s a spare king. He’s been living his life without any rules or repercussions. Now he has you. Both boys have pasts. A.J. will never be totally honest with you. It’s not in his nature. And Beaux’s never had anything to be responsible for.”
The doors to the elevators slid open. Cara smiled at a group of boys coming off the elevator, admiring their chiseled bodies and lack of clothing. I chewed on my lip as we walked into the elevator. The doors shut out the sounds from the lobby.
“Here’s my other sister thing: A.J. loves you, but his House comes first and all the duties and suitings that come along with it. Beaux is easy on the eyes but has a heart that’s buried under eighteen years of being told you don’t matter. You can change that. I’ve seen how the world reacts to you. You just have to make them both know you need to be protected. You’re worth protecting.”

After reading the Excerpt, you can see that Cara, Cassie's Half Sister is growing to like her and help her along the way. You'll be surprised on how much Cara becomes an Asset to Cassie when defending the House of Heart.

About WOLF BITE (Wolf Cove Series #2):
Isolated in the luxurious Wolf Cove Hotel in Alaska, Abbi Mitchell is thousands of miles away from her family and friends.

In the hands of a predator. Potentially.

After discovering condemning information about the mercurial man who controls her day-to-day work life and, now, her most intimate private life as well, Abbi's not sure she can continue on with... whatever is going on between her and Henry Wolf. Especially when he's about to be thrown into a fiery media circus ring, and she, along with her reputation, will undoubtedly get dragged into it with him.

But breaking things off with the Big Bad Wolf now likely means losing her job and her summer of freedom, and going back to the farm and her controlling mother.

She's not doing that.

Abbi does have something to hold over Henry's head. If he forces her hand. If she has the guts to do what amounts to blackmail.

But will the all-powerful Henry Wolf concede, or will she finally feel his bite?

WARNING . . . WARNING . . . WARNING . . . An Excerpt of Wolf Bite

Blood rushes to my head with the abrupt change in subject, and his flash pan change in demeanor. Private Henry is back, but we’re not in private. “Here?” I look around. It’s a secluded path, screened from bugs, shielded from the elements above, surrounded by dense bush and only used by the three Penthouse Cabins’ guests and the staff catering to those guests. I rarely ever pass anyone on my way to and from Henry’s place. It’s quite peaceful and private. Still, just beyond those trees, maybe a hundred feet away and definitely within earshot, is a resort full of people.
What Henry’s talking about is basically exhibitionism. Is he serious?
One glance at the hard look on his face tells me he is.
My body, which can still feel him inside me, responds immediately. But this isn’t good. The lines between Private Henry and Public Mr. Wolf are beginning to blur for him. “I think you need to focus on your various serious problems at hand,” I warn him in a slow, careful voice.
His jaw clenches. “Believe me, those problems are still very much in the forefront of my mind. I’m just setting something to look forward to once they’re all resolved. You know, goals.”
“Goals.” I drop my gaze to the front of his pants, to the bulge forming. Goals for his dick, apparently. Which is exactly what got him into his current problems. I do believe that Henry is a smart and shrewd businessman. He’s just not thinking clearly right now, and he has a lot to lose by not thinking clearly. He does need me to be levelheaded because he can’t seem to be. “Okay, how about we focus on more responsible goals for now.”
He closes the distance, breaking the two-foot rule.
“What are you doing?” I hiss, glancing around.
“Trying to hold on to what we had back there for a little longer.” He jerks his head toward the cabin. “Trying to avoid reality.”
So, he felt the deep connection too. My heart swells. “I didn’t think Henry Wolf avoided anything.”
