Book Review: The Taking

The Taking (The Taking #1) by Kimberly Derting

The Taking (The Taking, #1)A flash of white light . . . and then . . . nothing.

When sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew wakes up behind a Dumpster at the Gas ’n’ Sip, she has no memory of how she got there. With a terrible headache and a major case of déjà vu, she heads home only to discover that five years have passed . . . yet she hasn’t aged a day.

Everything else about Kyra’s old life is different. Her parents are divorced, her boyfriend, Austin, is in college and dating her best friend, and her dad has changed from an uptight neat-freak to a drunken conspiracy theorist who blames her five-year disappearance on little green men.

Confused and lost, Kyra isn’t sure how to move forward unless she uncovers the truth. With Austin gone, she turns to Tyler, Austin’s annoying kid brother, who is now seventeen and who she has a sudden undeniable attraction to. As Tyler and Kyra retrace her steps from the fateful night of her disappearance, they discover strange phenomena that no one can explain, and they begin to wonder if Kyra’s father is not as crazy as he seems. There are others like her who have been taken . . . and returned. Kyra races to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had, but what if the life she wants back is not her own?

GRRR I can't find a reasonable X-files GIFS

Review
First you're standing in the present and then suddenly it's five years later . . .

Katelyn is stuck in limbo between her reality and what is REALITY NOW, unfamiliar with her surroundings the only thing that feels normal is her.

But does Normal really mean normal?

I give this an Three Cat's Tails Up, Sadly this did not meet up to my expectations, it was missing that "X-files factor"

MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW

SIGHS I really had high hopes for this book, but it just lack everything you expect when reading n Alien abduction story. I've been a BIG BIG fan of the X-files since I've been a kid and I was hoping that The Taking would have some aspect of what the X-files brought. However it didn't, I know I said I don't DNF but I probably should have quit when I got past the 50% mark but I really REALLY was hoping that it would get better.

The characters were okay, I just didn't see much development like you would expect when you're talking about a character that have been Abducted.

Kyra is that type of girl who had planned her future with her current boyfriend, not thinking of the other possibilities but when 5 years passed you would have to think about what do you do? What can you do? Kyra didn't think of that, she felt out of place, out of time and she grasp what the real reality was in front of her.

The problem with this was that there was no flashbacks, no hint of remembering what happen to her, no physical, mental, emotional trauma. It was missing a LOT. It was missing that Mulder and Scully factor, like really missing that.

Tyler whose Krya's ex boyfriend younger brother who is now five years older from the last time she seen him. He's a decent guy, he didn't push or ask much from Kyra and he had always secretly had a crush on her. Which was cute and sweet, he has that boy next door factor but again this relationship built slowly because Krya was still in that limbo.

The rest of the book was not at all exciting, I didn't get the whole "infection" among the abducted when they bleed because in my mind does that mean whatever they have could be airborne if they bleed? Even the Abduction group took awhile to reach in the book and they didn't really have much to start off with.

There wasn't a peak or a rise, the ending left it very like oh we lost a character but yet we didn't see much what happen with the rest of the characters.

So the question lies, would I be willing to read book two? perhaps but it won't be on the top of my list to must read now book. However if the reviews seems well then that might sway me.

Review
Katelyn had her whole life ahead of her, she had her dreams and she was determine to go after her dreams but one earthquake changes everything for Katelyn, now she's in the middle of nowhere "Wolf Springs", Arkansas.

Her grandfather had two rules . . .

 "Don't go out after dark." . . .

"Don't go into the woods"  . . .

What dangers lurks in the woods of Wolf Springs?

Katelyn is about to change the dynamics of Wolf Springs, but what if those dynamics could cost her life.

I give this 4 Cat's Tails Up, it was just enough for me to remember what happen in Unleashed without having to reread it. Katelyn's strange attack will cause havoc in Wolf Springs, the only option she has is by following the rules.

MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW
Okay so I have read Unleashed before but I also listed it as a re-read because I just wasn't in that "mode" of reading or reviewing so I aside it aside. Well the past couple days I skim the book and oddly enough remember some parts to it without actually having to re-read the book all over again.

So I was a little confuse on the whole Cirque-du-Soleil, it didn't fit other than that what's Katelyn's dream was before a huge earthquake took her mother's life. So now she is transported to Wolf Springs, Arkansas where her grandfather lives.

So now Katelyn must adjusted to her new living arrangements, but she plans to get the hell out of dodge when she turns 18 and head back to Sunny sunshine California. Although life isn't too bad at Wolf Springs except for the death of a teenage girl that was killed in the woods.

 "Don't go out after dark." Grandfather a.k. Ed says . . .

"Don't go into the woods" Grandfather a.k.a Ed says . . .

This is really uncharted territory for Katelyn because she never had to deal with this types or problems that Wolf Springs was having. Katelyn's first day of school she got paired up with Cordelia for a project, the two instantly becomes friends.

What I like about Cordelia was how sweet she was and so warm welcoming to Katelyn when she first arrives but it was also that innocence that she has even when there's a reason why Cordelia should be wary of who she becomes friends with and who she brings home.

The other character that Katelyn meets is Trick or "Valdmir" and I could already tell those drives back and forth to school and to her grandfather's house that Trick began to develop a crush on Katelyn. But for awhile Trick was only seen as a friend to Katelyn, even though her outburst of a passion kiss might say otherwise.

So what happens? Well another girl dies and then Katelyn was nearly the next victim but she was a victim of a wolf attack. A wolf with blue eyes and all hell is about to break loose.

What made Katelyn's attack different from the others? The fact was . . . she survived and now things will change for Katelyn.

Book Review: Wicked

Wicked (A Wicked Saga #1)
By Jennifer L Armentrout

Wicked (A Wicked Saga, #1)Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

Review
Something Wicked comes to New Orleans,
The secret Order must do everything to protect the humans from otherworldly supernaturals but when the numbers of death within the Order increase it becomes a concern.

Ivy wished she was a normal girl but she's not, she must fight to protect but would a new member of the Order drive her to distraction?
The clock is ticking, Ivy and Ren must quick be on their feet, find the gates and stop it from getting it open and they might have to face a few Faes and Ancients here and there.

I truly LOVE this book! There was a lot of Holy CATNIP moments in that book which means JLA have done her job right.

Can you hear me PURR really loud?
SassyCat's Books Review gives Wicked a PURRRFECT MEOWY  book

MEOW . . .  MEOW . . . MEOW
This is the first book that I've read of 2015! and I'm glad I picked Wicked, holy catnip I'm almost done with it in two days!

Ivy Morgan wishes that she was just an average college girl but she's not, she a part of an secret society call the Order. They protect the humans from supernatural beings nd hunt down the supernatural. Ivy been doing this for a few years now but the truth is her past still haunts her.

Ivy's night shift should have been just a regular stake and go but the Fae that she ran into wasn't an ordinary Fae, completely taken aback she knew that she was in more danger right at that very moment even when the Fae pulled a gun at her and was ready to shoot. Trying to get back to the Order before she bled out seems to be an impossible task but then before slipping into unconsciousness she saw the most beautiful green eyes she's ever saw.

Meet Ren Owens, the sexy green eyes guy that just transfer to New Orleans Order to help solve why so many members of the orders are being killed and what is stirring in New Orleans. Turns out Ren has his own little secrets to why he would be in New Orleans and what he's searching for. But the one thing he knows is that Ivy drive him madly crazy in love and he's willing to do anything to get that little taste of sweetness.

What I LOVE about Wicked is that both Ivy and Ren have the hots for each other right in the very beginning, there was that instant chemstriy. I love Ren's references in Disney girls although its a little odd that an young adult guy watches Disney movies and find all the princesses equally attractive.

Also Ren falls under my newly book boyfriend categories PUUURRRRR.

Tink is another favorite of mine, I sort of want one but I would have to password protect everything and make sure that he doesn't hack into every account I own. I might get him to cut down on the sugar since he's too hyper anyway.

The characters are quite refreshing! And I love the fact that Wicked is NA which makes me a little bit more willing to dive into NA books but I'm still working on reading more NA.

So I'm ready for some more Wicked things to happen in New Orleans and especially after that little cliffhanger JLA have left us in the end of Wicked.  I wonder what will happen in TORN, will that little Cliffhanger be reveal or will something much darker come thy way into New Orleans.

Book Review: The Subsitution

The Substitute (The Wedding Pact #1) by Denise Grover Swank

The Substitute (The Wedding Pact #1)The first book in a humorous contemporary romance from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Denise Grover Swank.

Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean--a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.

With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane--a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.

Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

Review
Facing the inevitable Megan Vandemeer must fly back home for her wedding . . . A wedding that should hve been called off long ago. She should have just called it off but she didn't now she'll have to face the music.

Josh McMillan is at the brink of losing his family company, he's on his way back Kansas city to make one more attempt to save the business

What he didn't expect was to sit next to a women that has her own problems that he felt that he needs to comply to help her in any way he can. However helping Megan prove to be a lot more than he bargain for.

I give this an 4.5 Cat Tails Up, I love the instant love connection and the fact that both Megan and Josh has no idea in what to expect upon arriving to the wedding day.

MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW
Wow talk about a humorous romance, Josh had no idea what was in store for him and Megan is about to give him the ride of his life.

Megan feels a little bad that she dragged poor Josh into her problems but sometimes fate works in strange way where she might just need him for everything as well the same in reverse. When Josh meets Megan's family at the airport he's just been offer the biggest opportunity to save his business but how to get what he's want and help Megan get through a wedding that going to happen no matter what.

But during the first twenty-four hours changes everything between them.

What I like about The Substitute was the fact that two random people both having their own set of issues that led to them to take one risk with each other.

I love Josh, he was the most sincere book character I have ever read he had his ups and downs but meeting Megan was probably the best thing that could ever happen to him.

Megan should be glad that she dumped Jay because if she had kept her relationship with Jay, then she would have never ended up sitting next to Josh. Also Megan need to grow a backbone! UGH it bothered me that she was such a pushover and her mom basically destroyed everything for her like switching out the wedding dress.

That was a wrong move mother.

Blair is one tough chick, I think she often lets her attorney side overtake her softer side that she has with her friends but even after all the digging around Josh still wouldn't turn away from Megan. But im glad that she saw past what Josh "profile" and accepted that he truly does love Megan.

It was sad to hear about Megan's mother dark story that made her who she became the perfect knickers. Grams really did the right thing by telling Megan about it and why she never saw her aunt heather again after that one week but it was also very sad that Megan's mother didn't talk to her sister ever again after what had happen but now Megan mother will always live with the guilty of not having one more chance with her to talk.

Megan and Josh pulled through the wedding, and they couldn't be more happier to be married to one another and being Mrs and Mr. McMillan.

The one other thing that made it special to the characters is the spot out at the campground, being cast under a skylight of stars. That is the most perfect place to go to when trying to get away from all the drama. I love it when Josh said "our spot" toward the end where everything was jut about to get destroyed and Megan heart must have skipped a beat when he said that.

Menagerie (Menagerie #1) By Rachel Vincent

From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.
