The Taking (The Taking #1) by Kimberly Derting
A flash of white light . . . and then . . . nothing.
When sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew wakes up behind a Dumpster at the Gas ’n’ Sip, she has no memory of how she got there. With a terrible headache and a major case of déjà vu, she heads home only to discover that five years have passed . . . yet she hasn’t aged a day.
Everything else about Kyra’s old life is different. Her parents are divorced, her boyfriend, Austin, is in college and dating her best friend, and her dad has changed from an uptight neat-freak to a drunken conspiracy theorist who blames her five-year disappearance on little green men.
Confused and lost, Kyra isn’t sure how to move forward unless she uncovers the truth. With Austin gone, she turns to Tyler, Austin’s annoying kid brother, who is now seventeen and who she has a sudden undeniable attraction to. As Tyler and Kyra retrace her steps from the fateful night of her disappearance, they discover strange phenomena that no one can explain, and they begin to wonder if Kyra’s father is not as crazy as he seems. There are others like her who have been taken . . . and returned. Kyra races to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had, but what if the life she wants back is not her own?

GRRR I can't find a reasonable X-files GIFS
Review
First you're standing in the present and then suddenly it's five years later . . .
Katelyn is stuck in limbo between her reality and what is REALITY NOW, unfamiliar with her surroundings the only thing that feels normal is her.
But does Normal really mean normal?
I give this an Three Cat's Tails Up, Sadly this did not meet up to my expectations, it was missing that "X-files factor"
MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW
SIGHS I really had high hopes for this book, but it just lack everything you expect when reading n Alien abduction story. I've been a BIG BIG fan of the X-files since I've been a kid and I was hoping that The Taking would have some aspect of what the X-files brought. However it didn't, I know I said I don't DNF but I probably should have quit when I got past the 50% mark but I really REALLY was hoping that it would get better.
The characters were okay, I just didn't see much development like you would expect when you're talking about a character that have been Abducted.
Kyra is that type of girl who had planned her future with her current boyfriend, not thinking of the other possibilities but when 5 years passed you would have to think about what do you do? What can you do? Kyra didn't think of that, she felt out of place, out of time and she grasp what the real reality was in front of her.
The problem with this was that there was no flashbacks, no hint of remembering what happen to her, no physical, mental, emotional trauma. It was missing a LOT. It was missing that Mulder and Scully factor, like really missing that.
Tyler whose Krya's ex boyfriend younger brother who is now five years older from the last time she seen him. He's a decent guy, he didn't push or ask much from Kyra and he had always secretly had a crush on her. Which was cute and sweet, he has that boy next door factor but again this relationship built slowly because Krya was still in that limbo.
The rest of the book was not at all exciting, I didn't get the whole "infection" among the abducted when they bleed because in my mind does that mean whatever they have could be airborne if they bleed? Even the Abduction group took awhile to reach in the book and they didn't really have much to start off with.
There wasn't a peak or a rise, the ending left it very like oh we lost a character but yet we didn't see much what happen with the rest of the characters.
So the question lies, would I be willing to read book two? perhaps but it won't be on the top of my list to must read now book. However if the reviews seems well then that might sway me.
Sorry you didn't like this book more! I've been wanting to read it for a while because I am really intrigued about the romance aspect of it. I LOVE the whole brothers thing, lol. I'll still probably give this book a go. Thanks for informative review. Now my expectations will be lowered and I might enjoy it more. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI really had high expectations for this book, I didn't read any of the reviews and I normally don't. It was a book about abductions and aliens, it took me back to my all time favorite show the X-files however this book lacks that. The romance in this book was okay but it took a long time to reach to anything exciting and even that excitement level was low as well. So good luck
