Book Review: The Stars Never Rise

The Stars Never Rise by Rachel Vincent

Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Review

You abide to the Church, you confess your sins, you repent yours sins.

If you commit a sin keep it discreet . . . OR ELSE

Nina Kane grew up thinking that she would devote herself to the Church but then something happen, something unexplained

She's an EXORCIST, an natural born Exorcist but being just that can get her on the most wanted list

Nina get saved by the mysterious green-eyes FINN but her sister Melanie gets left behind
Now it's a rescue to save her sister before its too late but getting to her will be a little tricky, can Nina save her sister in time?

What lies under the secrets of the Church?

I give this an 4.5 Cat's Tails Up, Rachel Vincent wrote a wonderful sinful dystopian world for The Stars Never Rise.

MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW

Whoo! The book is out and of course it made it on the top to read reading list, and I'm glad I made this book a priority.

So what did I think?!?! Rachel wrote a world where even I was terrified! And a whole bunch of demon possessing going around. It has a mixture of Supernatural and The Walking Dead in a good way.

Nina Kane is an 16 year old girl whose about to get the biggest realization about the Church and herself, Nina was about ready to devote herself to the Church until her younger sister Melanie gets KNOCKED UP, while they scrap for items and food. The last thing Nina need is her sister getting knocked up, and with their mother slowly declining in health only to find out that their mother is a DEMON!!!

The realization kicks in where your Demon mother has had plans for you and having it all fall through the cracks raise up ugly stuff. Nina defends her sister and attack their demon mom only when Nina is about to lose the fight, an strange glow lights up from her hands and the demon mother is no more.

Then the mysterious Green-eye exorcist appears that save her a few nights ago from a dengerate and now at her house. He tells her that she need to leave her sister behind and come with him, but how can you leave your sister for a stranger? Nina runs with the mysterious Green-Eye . . .

Who is this mysterious Green-Eye Boy?

Well first his name is just AWESOME! And his name is FINN.

Mysterious is the correct word to describe Finn but he's also very compassionate towards everyone he's around especially with Nina BUT Finn is a whole different kind of individual to describe. I think many people will love Finn when they read The Stars Never Rises but they'll be left wondering one thing about him. Something extremely unique.

The world that Rachel built is so beyond scary and wonderfully done, with everything being run by the Church. You abide to the Church rules or get Anathema. If you are under suspicious of demon possession, you are taken in to the Church and is "Exorcist" but there's a greater problem that lies within the Church.

YOU ARE NOT SAFE WITH THE CHURCH!!!!!!

With a small group that Finn is with along with Nina now, she learn the truth and turns out the only places that are considered "safe" is the badlands where tons of demons, dengerates lies. But it's their only option to get away from the corrupt Church. What will they face once they enter the Badlands? More Anathemas, more exorcists? More Demons?

I can't wait for The Flame Never Dies!!!!! On another note, the cover for The Stars Never Rise is beautiful and I honestly envision book two of a butterfly in flames or flame colors.

Book Review: All Played Out

All Played Out (Rusk University #3) by Cora Carmack\

All Played Out (Rusk University, #3)First person in her family to go to college? CHECK.
Straight A’s? CHECK.
On track to graduate early? CHECK.
Social life? …..yeah, about that….

With just a few weeks until she graduates, Antonella DeLuca’s beginning to worry that maybe she hasn’t had the full college experience. (Okay... Scratch that. She knows she hasn't had the full college experience).

So Nell does what a smart, dedicated girl like herself does best. She makes a "to do" list of normal college activities.

Item #1? Hook up with a jock.

Rusk University wide receiver Mateo Torres practically wrote the playbook for normal college living. When he’s not on the field, he excels at partying, girls, and more partying. As long as he keeps things light and easy, it's impossible to get hurt... again. But something about the quiet, shy, sexy-as-hell Nell gets under his skin, and when he learns about her list, he makes it his mission to help her complete it.

Torres is the definition of confident (And sexy. And wild), and he opens up a side of Nell that she's never known. But as they begin to check off each crazy, exciting, normal item, Nell finds that her frivolous list leads to something more serious than she bargained for. And while Torres is used to taking risks on the field, he has to decide if he's willing to take the chance when it's more than just a game.

Together they will have to decide if what they have is just part of the experiment or a chance at something real.

Review

The bucket list that started it all . . .

Nell is the quirky focused college girl who doesn't have much experiences in LIFE, so in order to change that she created her own bucket list.

Mateo is the jock that everyone wants their hands on, but nobody ever stood out to him except and until Nell came along.

With Nell wanting to experiences a lot of FIRSTS, Mateo is determine to make sure that all of her FIRSTS goes right, including her most intimate ones.

During the time they share together . . . there's just might be something that either one of them expected.

Falling in Love . . .

I give this 4.5 Cat's Tail Up! Cora's writing is impeccable! I really can't believe that I'd never pick up her book until now. A Bucket list that started it all.

MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW

First off the writing is unbelievable! Cora writes as if she's is the age her characters are, Nell and Mateo are two polar opposite. Girl genius vs Jock.

Now myself as a reader/blogger I am too an college student but I never lived in dorms and I never went to colleges parties because yeah it's not my scene at all. Nell is sort of the same way but then she goes making a list of things to do before she graduates. To add some life experiences, that's where Mateo comes along . . . Sort of but he did come with a warning.

Mateo is very athletic and I don't think when I read the book, there was a mention to what college degree he was studying. So is he smart? Geeky? Which I don't see. Or average? I don't know! But he certainly knows a lot about doing Firsts.

Having your first drink
Having your first time
Having your first keg stand
Let's just say a lot of firsts . . . Especially for Nell.

Nell and Mateo don't really know what's to expect between each other and with Mateo pushing all the buttons Nell has and helping her with her bucket list you wonder what else will get added on.

All Played Out has all of that opposite attracts chemistry, even more so Mateo who's a jock actually like girls like Nell. With this "relationship" moving so fast, is the fire going to burn out?

Between finding out about how sexy a library can be, skinny dippy, and Nell having her first time that there could be something real between Mateo and Nell but sometimes their differences in life can ruin that. When Mateo finds out about Nell's graduating, he realizes that he may only have a short time with her and when he started putting his own health at risks Nell doesn't think she could be with someone who is only thinking about sport as a logical career.

Maybe somethings aren't meant to last . . .

Nell took the risk of creating a bucket list, but she really didn't think that
A. She would fall In love.
B. Get her heartbroken.

and

C. Wants it all back again.

RED MOON...: #Teaser - ALL PLAYED OUT by Cora Carmack

The ending of this book was bittersweet, both Nell and Mateo want it all back! These two I think deserve to be getting engaged in the future, having their own place together, and having a lot more firsts.

Menagerie (Menagerie #1) by Rachel Vincent

Menagerie (Menagerie, #1)
From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

Top 10 Tuesday

Top 10 Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish, today topic is Top Ten Books I'd Love To See As Movies/Tv Shows.

This is extremly hard because there's so many books that I have read and all of them could be contenders for Movie/TV shows.

1. Soul Screamers Series
It would probably be better off doing it as a TV show unless the producers can find a way to fit 300+ into 120 pages which is the max for when converting a book into a movie. The journey that Kaylee had to go through during her High School life had a lot of ups and downs, and learning about something she never knew but had always thought that she was crazy with her panic attack.

2. The Naturals
Honestly I love this series although there's only two books so far, it's a crime/thriller/paranormal book and I tend to do like some crime/thrillers shows. This series could go on forever since there's really no ending of this series, so which way would it be? Most likely a TV show because you can come up with different plots and if it were to be a Movie, you're really narrowed down to just what the book plot is with no expansion.

3. Fire and Blood series
MOVIE . . . Enough said

4. Lux Series
I know it's in the works for a Movie and I agree with it being a Movie AS LONG THEY DON"T FREAKING MESS IT UP!

5. The Selection Series
It was option for a TV show on CW but didn't get the green light for a first season and I think I know why proabaly because they also have presented Reign as a TB show as well and that one won in favor

6. The Rose Gardner Series
TV SHOW!!!! that way everything goes at its own pace rather than forced during the movie.

7. Shfiters Series
I don't know which way i would want it, maybe movie or maybe TV show. I just don't know.

8. The Depossessed series
It can go either way . . . but it would probably rave better as a movie but Gargoyles was a TV show and a MOVIE before it really went into an TV show. So would you want to see Gargoyles on the big screen? Me personally YES.

9. Pushing the Limits Series
I can't make up my mind on TV or Movie . . . each book is different

10. A Wicked Saga
Definitely a TV show . . . but it could face competition with the other shows set in New Orleans.

Book two in the USA Today bestselling Wedding Pact series.

Then a twist of fate lands Garrett back in her life, and the man who loomed large in her past is suddenly casting a shadow over her wedding, making her question everything. To complicate matters further, the job she loves is in peril, and she can feel the ‘perfect’ life she’s fashioned for herself start to crumble under her feet. Could everything she's believed about life and love be wrong?

Garrett Lowry is a divorce attorney who's ready to settle down. The problem is that he can’t find a woman who suits him nearly as well as the one he loved and lost. He broke her heart by playing the field after their break up—something he’s always regretted. But after months of pining for Blair, Garrett stumbles across her in a freak coincidence—and then destiny keeps throwing them together, the coincidences becoming ever more unlikely. He’s convinced it's a sign they should give their love a second chance, but Blair is engaged to another man—a man who is absolutely wrong for her.

Can Garrett convince Blair that a player once isn’t a player forever, and that happy endings aren’t just for dreamers?

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became a nomadic gypsy, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in own her mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to
perform many unspeakable tasks.

She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity.
Or so she leads you to believe.

The shock on Blair’s face matched his own surprise at his out-of-nowhere declaration.

Nana Ruby was going to kill him.

He’d had no intention of laying claim to the ring, and in truth, he could give a rat’s ass about it. But damned if he was going to stand by and let his punk cousin marry Blair, let alone with that ring.

Now, instead of diffusing the situation, he’d ratcheted it up to Def-Con 1. Jesus, he had to get things under control.

“I won’t rip the ring off the bride-to-be’s hand, if that’s what you concerned about,” he said, dropping Blair’s hand and trying to control his racing heart. “We’ll wait for Nana to come tomorrow night. She can help make the decision.”

This brought on a new round of shouting and dismay. Whiney Neil tossed out the phrase “you’re her favorite.” While that was probably true, he doubted Nana could help him get the girl, which was his real goal. That one was all on him.

Blair looked on in confusion, making it abundantly clear they’d kept her in the dark about the questionable ownership of her ring. But soon her bewilderment turned to anger as she narrowed her eyes at him.

“It’s time for all of you to pay up,” his aunt said shaking the plastic cat jar. “Blair, you got off easy this time. You only owe a dollar. Neil, you owe two, and you, Gene Neilson Fredrick, must owe at least five between the drinking and the cursing.”

Uncle Gene and Aunt Debra had a stare off for several seconds before Gene caved. He must have decided to choose his battles because he dug out his wallet and sheepishly stuck a five-dollar bill into the jar. Neil put in his money and Garrett handed over a dollar when Debra shoved the jar in Blair’s direction.

His aunt scowled at him. “Surprisingly, you don’t owe anything.”

Garrett tucked his money into the jar and winked at Blair. “Oh, this is for the bride. Call it an early wedding gift. But it this is for cursing, as the label suggests, you owe some money yourself, Aunt Debra.” His eyebrows rose with mock recrimination.

“And I do believe I need to have a discussion with my mother about my true parentage. No one ever told me I was a bastard.”

Debra’s face turned red, although Garrett couldn’t tell if it was from
embarrassment or anger. Probably both.

He’d earned a scowl from Blair for donating the money on her behalf, but now he could tell she was trying to hold back a grin.

"That was an unfortunate loss of self-control.” The woman’s face twisted into disgust as she pulled her wallet out of her purse and pulled out one dollar. She screwed an indignant expression on her face. “The Lowrys seem to bring out the worst in me.”

Blair tipped her head, her eyes dancing with mischief. “Actually, Debra, you owe two dollars. One for informing your nephew of his illegitimacy and the second for spelling out the home of you know who.”

   Debra’s eyes widened in shock.

“Blair!” Neil cried out in horror.

Garrett knew the Fredricks liked to tiptoe around his aunt’s self-righteous attitude.

He was glad to see Blair hadn’t kowtowed like the rest of them.

“You know who?” Garrett asked in amusement. He couldn’t help but take pleasure in riling up his aunt and irritating his cousin. Especially since Blair seemed to find Debra as obnoxious as he did. “Dare I ask who that is?”

Blair lifted her eyebrows. “Why, the prince of darkness himself.”

“Lord Voldemort?” Garrett teased, shooting his aunt an amused look.

She wasn’t so pleased. “Who is this Lord Voldemort you keep talking about? Do we need to add him to the kitty list?”

Garrett burst out into laughter. He was surprised his aunt didn’t already know about the notorious villain.

“No, Mom,” Neil said. “He’s a character from a children’s book, which explains why Garrett is so enthralled with him.”

Garrett noticed he left Blair off the naughty list, but it didn’t stop him from giving her a look of reproach. She glanced away, trying to hide her grin.

So his Blair was still there, lurking below the prim and proper exterior. Just like he’d found her years ago.
