Victoria Scott's breathtaking novel grabs readers by the throat and doesn't let go

Hardcover, 320 pages
Expected publication: February 25th 2014 by Scholastic Press

Now I have to say! That sounds pretty cool! I heard so much about Victoria's writing and I yet still have to read The Collector and meet this famous Dante that everyone speaks of.

I really love the cover, it really does do its justice that Victoria and the Scholastic team would hoped,
In a nutshell, they wanted three things: simplicity, masculinity, and for the cover to attract readers of all ages and genders. Well, I believe they succeeded with flying colors. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results, - See more at: http://www.victoriascottya.com/fire-flood-cover-reveal/#more-3635

And Victoria I wish you all the best success of this book to be as successful just like when Collector was released.

What are your thoughts about this book?

Yes I would buy it
My siblings sister/brother would like it
The Cover is insanely wicked

Excerpt

“Go away,” she said, swatting Baron on the chest lightly. “I’m dancing with Caleb now.”

Grinning, Baron strolled off the dance floor, looking ridiculously pleased with himself.

Caleb watched him depart and made a sound in his throat, one that could almost have been a growl.

Something about the guttural sound made Marissa shiver.

“Caleb,” she began, positioning herself for their dance. “You really shouldn’t let Baron…”

“Shh.” He slid his arm around her waist and pulled her close to him. “No talking. Just dancing.”

Shrugging, Marissa decided that would be just as well. She had a lot to think about anyway.

Not that she was going to seriously consider that nonsense of Baron's. Really. Caleb couldn’t be interested in her that way. Not sexually.

Sure, he was acting rather bizarre, but it was probably prompted by the challenge Baron posed. It was just some silly, masculine, dominance thing. It wasn't actually about her. At least, not in that way.

Caleb’s gaze was mesmerizing in its intensity. It felt like his silver-gray eyes scorched every part of her body they focused on, and he seemed to be focusing everywhere—all over her body—as they went through the motions of the dance.

She shuddered again, and at her shudder he pulled her even closer, so that her breasts rubbed against his chest every time their hips swayed together.

She could actually feel her nipples. Feel them. Was suddenly scared that Caleb could feel them too.

They’d danced together before, but it had never been like this.

He’d never held her this close or stared at her this deeply.

Baron had said that Caleb looked at her like he wanted to swallow her whole.

Marissa tore her eyes away. That couldn’t be right. They were friends. Just friends. Had never been anything else. Why would Caleb all of a sudden want to change things?

It felt like she was burning up, and she knew her cheeks must be blazing red.

Her lips felt parched, so she slid her tongue out to lick them nervously. Tried to moisten them enough so they wouldn't feel so cracked. But then she caught a look on Caleb’s face—one she'd never seen there before—and quickly returned her tongue to her mouth.

Obsidian (Lux #1) Review

Obsidian

Obsidian (Lux, #1)Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is

Paperback, 2nd Edition, 361 pages
Published May 8th 2012 by Entangled Teen (first published November 23rd 2011)

My first Alien book! Sure it's not the little green men that I hear of from the x-files but green eyes are known to be daring. Don't believe me? look at the Obsidian cover more closely then you tell me otherwise.
Review
Moving in a small town in West Virgina was not what Katy had in mind, she imagined herself still at the beach soaking up the Florida sun. But it was time for a change her mom said, it was time to move on from the past.

Katy's goal was to introduce herself to the next door neighbor where two teens her age live in but what she got was daring green eyes staring right back her . . . His name is Dameon Black.

Daemon does just about anything to annoyed Katy but when his sister Dee get too close in making friends with Katy he want to break up this friendship before it even happens. Why?

Daemon and Dee has a secret . . . They're not from Earth or any of the surrounding planets and when Katy seems to be drawn to Dee and even Dameon (some times) that raises some concerns, how close is too close?

This is Purr Fest! I love it so much that I choose to read Onyx next, now I am focused on reading Onyx and I have no idea what's coming.

Ramble
So here's an awesome note, Katy is a blogger like me! But I don't have that Daemon Black bothering my every thoughts and driving me insane. But that what makes this book so fun and entertaining, the love/hate relationship between Katy and Daemon is funny.

When Daemon's twin sister Dee instantly connects with Katy, Daemon must do what he can to break up the friendship before it happens since there is too much at stakes for his family and for other people that are like him.

But Dee isn't going to take on Daemon's pestering she like having a "normal" friend  and the bonus is that Katy lives right next door to her. After Daemon had said some hurtful things to Katy, Dee punish Daemon by taking his keys and tells him to apologize and make amends with Katy.

Soon Katy realizes that Daemon and Dee aren't from around here, after Katy been attack and daemon stepping in to save her, but this isn't where the secret is revealed in fact daemon has no choice but to tell Katy the truth after she witness the unthinkable.

The secret is out but what is a Lux? They are being of lights, they can bend light at their will and some even are able to do other things. Lux is Latin for light in case anyone was wondering. But just like any other others, Lux has enemies called Arum that search for the most powerful and drain them of their powers thus killing them.

Can I say that Katy always ends up at the wrong place wrong time? because she does and who comes to the rescue . . . Daemon. But that is not the worst of it, whenever Daemon uses his ability its leaves a trace and the only way to get rid of a trace is by some form of physical activities otherwise the Arum can find you and will kill you no matter what.

Katy done a lot to help Daemon and Dee, she even faced a Arum alone until her last breath but lucky Daemon arrived just soon enough and then Daemon, Dee and Katy were getting injured but Daemon forced himself to protect Katy and Dee. In the end Katy ends up saving Daemona and Dee somehow but it left her so weak where Daemon did the unthinkable . . . healing her.

And if you really wonder if Daemon does have feelings for Katy, the bonus chapters of Daemon's POV certainly tells all. If you don't have that edition, unless you were able to get them in ebook format I would go buy the newly edition one with the bonus features. ;-)

Book one of the Lux series was fast driven, heart-pounding and love/hate entertaining, I would recommend to anyone whose looking for an alien theme book.
Favorite Quotes
Any time Daemon calls Katy, Kitten is my fav of all times ;-)

"Oh, you know, just that the color red is Daemon's favorite." ~ Dee

"The Arum will end up killing him." Her tone didn't change one bit. It remained flat, emotionless.b "Because of you, little human. He will get himself killed protecting you." ~ Ash

"Too late to tell her how I felt, to touch, to just hold her, to make up for every terrible thing I' done and said. It was too late for me." ~ Daemon

Expected publication: June 17th 2013 by Entangled: Edge
This book was given to me as an advanced review copy, from Jaime Arnold (Senior Publicist of Entangled Publishing, LCC)
This is my first suspense book with military influence, so bare with me on reviewing this book it also was influence with history of the Grand Duchess Anastasia.
Review
Having to filled in for his boss due to sickness was not what Ryan Smith had intended on doing, but when his computer tech guy say that someone was heading to their secure location . . . it was time to brace for intruders. Waiting for the intruder traveling by car, it's turns out to be a woman who carries a very important ICBM key and information about the President of Russia.
Anya Radzoya, a geneticist with a painful past, a royal bloodline connection, has to risk everything to find her grandmother after she'd disappeared and Anya knows who did it. However making deals with the president of Russia was out of the question, his quest for super Russians, power, and control of the most powerful weapons of Russian, with Anya by his side. Anya has to play princess/spy while she search for her grandmother's location but she also has to deal with Ryan Smith the spy that she must learn to trust.
Ryan and Anya must work together to find the evidence although Anya already seen some of President Ivanov's plans up close, she need more . . . they need more to call for actions. The Key to unlocking Russia's greatest weapons lies within Anya but just how far will Ryan and Anya's grandmother go to protect Anya? When it is her DNA that is the key element to unlocking the Missiles and the enemy already has the code?

I give this 3 Cat's Tails Up, I like the visualization of Russia that was explained and some of the science/medical aspect but having the Grand Duchess concept made the story a little bleh and confusing to me.

Ramble
So I was quite draw to how authentic and visually explain of where the book is taken place. However for many moments I had the Anastasia flashbacks, the female name is Anya and the movie used Anya as her short name since she couldn't remember who she was. The next piece was the tragedy of the Romanov family (despite how Hollywood and other media, scientist and researchers had found remains of Anastasia outside of the castle therefore she never lived a full life as a regular human being or grand duchess)
Anya in the book, saw her parent get killed by the man in black when she was a kid. But Anya in the book had different qualities than the real Anastasia, 1) she had a very rare type of blood disorder that was passed on from both of her parents 2) Anya play better as a spy than a grand duchess 3) Anya is a genetic scientist (she takes after her mother) and 4) turns out that Anya's father use her DNA sequence as a code for the most destructive weapon Russia has.
Now there was a small hint of romance between Ryan and Anya but there wasn't much, and I kind of wish that there was more. They make a good couple but still I wished for more.

Anya's grandmother was a double spy, but along the way she has made sure that the key to unlocking the missiles were kept secret. She met allies and made enemies in her days as a spy but she also had a lover's quarrel  that no one really knew about but in the end Anya's grandmother kept her silence but that did end up costing her life. Among Anya's family, her grandmother was the only living relative alive but she discover that her grandfather still lived to this day and want make a new start with her.

The story was slightly misleading with mixing the Grand Duchess Anastasia and the character Anya, I think the location of where the book was taken place was good and the mission was good but I would have been fine using some history of Anastasia rather than making her THE Anastasia.

Into the Fire Review

Into The Fire By Amanda Usen

Into the Fire (A Hot Nights Series Book)Book Description
Jackson Calabrese has a lot of nerve. He beat Lila Grant in the Culinary Academy competition using her recipes. Now, he’s opening a restaurant and wants her help? Fine, she'll fix his menu, but it's going to cost him.

Heir to the Calabrese restaurant empire, Jackson can buy anything he wants, except creativity, so he buys Lila's instead. He can craft perfect paella, but to take New York by storm he needs her innovative spark.

Skillets aren't the only things hot in the kitchen, and an uneasy truce ignites into passion. They’re great in bed, but Jackson doesn't trust her, and Lila is contemplating revenge. The restaurant opening approaches, the menu is completed, and the tables are set for one final act of betrayal. How can love bloom in the midst of such a hot mess?

ebook, 201 pages

Review
Lila Grant been waiting forever to finally shine through her culinary graduates but she faces her competition Jack Calabrese the man who has it all and has the family name that does him justice. It true what they say, Chefs never share their secret recipes. Just before the big cook off, Lila and Jack dive into their indulgence and desires but once the cook off started, it was anyone's kitchen. Months later after Lila took off to do her own thing after being upstaged by Jack Calabrese, she hoped she never see that Jack again until now . . . The growing love and hate romance get hotter and it might be too hot for both chefs to handle. A determine Jack wants to rekindle with Lila whenther she denies it or not but Jack also asked of her help with his new restaurant opening and believes his menus aren't good enough. Can these two work together or will it be Chopped?

I give this a 5 Cat's Tails, I love the mixture of food and romance, heck even the whole back and forth arguing about anything and everything that deals with them and food.
Ramble
This book was pretty hot in the kitchen, both Lila and Jack can't deny the chemistry they have together. However Lila still holds a grudge against Jack, will she take this opportunity to sabotage Jack. I love that they both shared the same passion for food, and even the same passion in bed. Lila's intentions were to create chaos for Jack's restaurant but after spending a little more time with him, her perspective changed. Jack has that family dynamics, he has to do everything perfect otherwise his father looks the other way. Jack spent most of his cooking career trying to shine on that is why it was so important that he won the cooking competition but I wonders if he knew of Lila's position and why she was so edger to win.
I like the pace of the book but there were some part where I felt it wasn't needed to fill in the gap, but it was still focused on Lila and Jack. Overall it was an enjoyable read, I like the whole chefs concept because I haven't read anything like this before so it was a new read for me.

Into the Fire Blog Tour + Guest Post

Who doesn't like a little romance with a lot of yummy foods to drool over? If your're one of those people then you came to the right book.  Amanda delivers a mixture of both food and romance and today I have her here on my blog SassyCat for some of her favorite scenes/passages.
So take it away Amanda!

Howdy, y’all! Hi, Kat! You want to know which scenes are my favorite, huh? The first one that comes to mind happens after Jack has proposed a one-night truce during their ongoing feud. He shows up to pick Lila up for their date, pulls his white t-shirt off over his head and waves it around like a white flag. Then he drops it on the floor. These two have tons of sexy tension, and I had so much fun writing a scene in which Lila could say:

“Are you kidding? Sex first, then dinner—and I don’t have to wear
uncomfortable shoes? Sold.”

Another favorite part happens right after that – Jack takes her to three of his favorite restaurants in NYC. I would love to go on a date like that! Wouldn’t it be great to get all dressed up, make mad, passionate love…then put on comfy clothes and stuff yourself silly at dinner? Yes! Pick me! Jack even says, “If you aren’t in a complete food coma after dessert tonight then you didn’t try hard enough.” Of course, I’m a pastry chef married to a chef, so that may have something to do with my food and sex fantasies – ha!

I also love the beginning of Chapter Three, which was the original Chapter One. (My editor thought it would be a good idea to go back and write Jack and Lila’s one-night-stand, so I added a couple chapters to the beginning. I mean, who would argue with great advice like that?) Lila is a catering chef, but she is pinch hitting for a server. It just so happens the catering company uses sex as a sales hook, so Lila’s uniform is a very revealing French maid getup. You can guess what’s going to happen, right? She hasn’t seen Jack since the morning after their one-night-stand when he did something so dastardly, she hopped the first train out of town. Jack’s at the party! Of course he’s at the party! And her boobs are on display, and she has to serve him hors d’oeuvres! While they sling zingers at each other! Jack gets the last word until he follows her into the kitchen. Trust me, Lila gets the last word there.

It’s not all sexy-sex and sexy-food, though. It’s a love story. Jack and Lila have good reasons to fight, but they are also falling in love with each other. I adore these thoughts from Lila:

Her feelings about Jack reminded her of the time she had waded into the ocean to the edge of the sand and stood firm. Every wave that hit her shins had washed a little sand from beneath her feet until she lost her balance. She felt as if every minute spent with Jack washed away a little more of her resolve. She needed to make a decision. Step forward or race back to firm ground?

And yes, I was standing in a lake, feeling sand wash out from beneath my toes, when I came up with that. Since I’m usually a little less lyrical and a little more direct, they almost got cut, but I fought for them.

Honestly, my favorite line in the book is near the black moment. Jack says something that makes my heart drop into hell every time I think about it. In case you decide INTO THE FIRE is up your alley, I won’t spoil that moment for you. Love is a risk, and it isn’t always easy, especially if, like Jack, you have ISSUES. So I will leave you with a line from Lila instead:

“A deal with the devil demanded a price, and it was always nearly impossible to pay.”

NEARLY impossible. Thank goodness Jack isn’t really the devil – he just plays him for the first part of INTO THE FIRE. Good thing Lila is such a clever, resourceful woman! It’s fun to watch her handle him. ;-)

Thank you for stopping by SassyCat today! I really enjoyed revisiting my favorite moments. Kat, thanks for having me and giving me a chance to talk about my characters. I love them so much, and I hope readers do, too!

Blogger Times: Not Hiding Out I Swear!

Heya my fellow readers and bloggers, I know I've been slightly absent from blogging and such . . . There are a few reasons to why I'm absent so I'll start with the biggest one

#1: My Laptop got infected, yes unfortunately that happens and it's been infected before in the past so I had to do a lot of my online stuff on the home desktop. Now surely you would think that shouldn't keep me from doing what I do on my laptop but reality is . . . it does!
Most places I go online since as blogger or email, heck even Twitter I have a automatic sign in just by typing the first letter of my user name then the rest is taken care of.

Another thing is everything that I do on my laptop, I try to keep it conceal from people around me I don't like snoopers or looking over my shoulder types so I did minimum stuff on the desktop or I tried to be discreet about it.
So that was my biggest issue was not having my laptop and I know how authors feels when something goes wrong.

#2: I had relatives over so I couldn't do much because I had to mesh with them.

#3: Have any of you serve Jury duty? Well I haven't so far but it is a two week term and I have no idea how long trials take in a day. So I have to do a constant check on my County Website to see if my number was picked. Honesty I don't find the point in doing this, I mean come on I'm 22 and I'm sure there are enough people older than me that can do Jury duty as well. But that's just my luck

#4: I am getting ready to travel to Baltimore, MD for a convention, so I've been researching on places to see while I'm there! Anyone in the Baltimore area? Please make a suggestion . . . but no guarantee that I'll be able to check it out.

I'm also taking my camera (The canon T3i Rebel, not the old camera that is also canon but it is a point and shoot style) Well my mom figure we need to find a case for the Rebel to travel with through security without it being too bulky so there was that task . . . finding a case.

Also I still have to PACK!!!! Trust me packing a 5 days worth of clothes and items is tough. Mom and I have a lot to do before we take off and we are going to have a very tight schedule.

#5: Have I been reading? Yes and No, I've done some reading in a short time slot but then I'm working on the reviews for those books. I think I have become more picky on how I write the review and making sure that it is helpful to my readers. But also helping out the authors getting some time in the spotlight. So here's some books I've read/working on review
  • 1) The Blood Code by Misty Evans (The review is schedule to be posted on the day of its released)
  • 2)Into the Fire Review and Guest Post (The review is finished I'll probably post it on the same day as my guest post with Amanda next week June 17th)
  • 3) I've just finished reading Obisidian by Jennifer L Armentrout and that review still has to be written but again I'd just finished it.
  • 4) Werewolves Be Damned was already post this week so I've check that off my list (Not that I use a check list)
  • 5) I gotten a request to review a book (this is my first author request to review their book so I'm excitied to read it) Its a reissued book called "The World Is Your Litter Box: Deluxe Edition: A How-To Manual for Cats" by

So I'm not trying to be in a cave or hiding out but since things requried a face to face than going online, I must go pay attention to that then come back to the internet. So be sure to check out my guest post with Amanda Usen and review of Into the Fire on June 17th

Werewolves Be Damned

Werewolves Be Damned (Magic and Mayhem #1)
By Stacey Kennedy

Werewolves Be Damned (Magic & Mayhem, #1)Book Description
Nexi Jones—part witch, part guardian, and wannabe kick-ass warrior—can’t throw a punch or conjure the simplest magic. But that doesn’t stop her from hunting the werewolves who slaughtered her human family. She’ll have her revenge, but only if Kyden, the elite guardian, would get the hell out of her way.

Kyden can’t decide if Nexi wants to get herself killed or if she just has no clue what she’s doing. But her father made it clear: keep Nexi safe…or else. Of course, the more Nexi runs toward revenge, the more she needs Kyden’s aid, and as she grows into her power and confidence, so does his desire to protect her. The only problem? She’d rather he dropped dead.

But when a vampire paints a bull’s-eye on Nexi’s back, she’s hard-pressed to deny Kyden and the help he’s offering. Even if it means getting her revenge will be a little bit harder. At least it will still be as sweet.

This story was previously published elsewhere under the title The Willow in 2010, and has been revised and expanded for Entangled Publishing.

I was given this as a thanks for participating for the Cover Reveal of Werewolves Be Damned, and I wished I could've read this sooner but with personal life issues I couldn't. So I'd like to thank Entangled Publishing for giving us blogger an ARC uncorrected PDF of WBD.

Stacey Kennedy delivers a twist of magic and magical beings all in one.

Review
Nexi Jones got the horrify moment of her life and if watching fully grown man turn into a werewolves wasn't scary enough. Now guardians of the Otherworld must step in to save her and protect her, but they couldn't save her family. Nexi is one of a kind person, being both part guardian and part witch the council are intrigue to see if she can truly be one of them for her purposes and theirs. Training with the super hot elite guardian Kyden, Nexi wonders if there was more beneath that caveman and guardian qualities. Kyden is that silent type when it comes to his personal life but he sense an overwhelming connection with Nexi, he wonders if she is his mate? Together these two are a spit ball of fire but also has great respect for another, and the idea of romance quickly grew. Nexi learns the skills of how to be a guardian, understand the world of Otherworld and deal with supernatural problems, but one question remains . . . would she ever be able to get in touch with her witches power? And will she find the person that destroyed her family.

This deserves a 5 cat's Tails up! It was so unique and it set apart from other books I've read with similar of magical beings and magic.

Ramble
I have to say, this was a pretty good book! I like how Stacey combine all magical beings such as werewolves, vampires and witches altogether! All my favorite things! Stacey also created the witches in a very unique way rather than write what witches have what power, that would have been hard to keep track altogether so what she did was use elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth as her component for the witches of otherworlds. The vampires have their own way of being unique, even having some vanished or opening a portal although most cannot.

The main Villain vampire has the ability to do what ever magic there is because he feeds off the blood of witches to obtain their powers (that one way to do it). All the while Nexi learning her guardian side, she also is learning her witches side.

Nexi must face the vampire that killed her mother and face the werewolves that killed her human family, what I thought was interesting was how Lazarus showed Nexi her mother's death to save hers. Even more so when Drake her father step in front of a werewolf that was about to attack Nexi also was killed. After all Nexi went through, she gain and lost but never wanted more than what she deserve.

The Characters:
Haven: She is a witch, but her primary element is Earth and what is cool about her abilities is that she can recreate scenes that has already happen. This is a helpful tool among the guardians when dealing with mysterious death of supernaturals and humans involve.
Lia: She the Mistress of witches, she is also on the council and she also has a deep connection with Nexi's biological mother. So Lia is even more curious how Nexi was always drawn to her mother's willow tree all the while Nexi never knew about her real parents. But Lia and Nexi's mother Tillie were soul sisters, Lia believes that the connection she has with Nexi's mother also pass on to Nexi as a baby so there that inner connection.
Drake: He is Nexi's biological father, he asked the council to block Nexi's powers so she could live and die as a human without any connection to the otherworld. This was asking a lot from him, after the lost of Nexi's mother/ his lover, he made a choice.
Kyden: He's the big time elite guardian who has to train, the ball of fire Nexi. Although he knows he can handle her but can he handle his heart? His desires for Nexi continue to grow while he trains her, he no longer can wait to initiate the romance between him and Nexi.
The Councils: Lia(Mistress of Witches), Talon(Master of Guardian), Zade(Master of Vampires), Holten(Master of Werewolves)
Lazarus: The vampire that nearly killed Kyden, killed Tillie and wants Nexi's power to become the most powerful vampire around. But he's was the bad guy and bad guys always loses the battle.

I really enjoyed this book, and I can't wait to read more of Nexi and Kyden what will be the new greater villain? Highly recommend
